Can armies get promoted? How about the units inside an army?

No, armies don't get promoted, but units inside the army gets promoted.
Is it possible to get units out of armies? Also, is it possible to fit different units in an army?

I don't it is possible to get units out of armies; I do think you can place different types of units into one army, if that answers the question.

Yeah, the units within armies can be in no way promoted, once there in, there in for good.

I have had my armies promoted. I don't know how though. I have 5 current armies. 3 with 4 elite MA in each and 2 with 4 elite tanks in each. When I right click on some it says activate veteran army, but on others it says activate veteran army.

Veteran units inside the army can be promoted. Any unit inside can be promoted. You just can't upgrade them. Remember, promotion means Conscript -> Regular -> Veteran -> Elite. Upgrading is taking an older, obsolete unit and making it modern. |

I'm tempted to say that Armies per say don't have a 'rank', but the units within do.
No where near having armies in my current game, so I can't confirm. But I'm pretty sure that's how it is. |

Yeah, the units within the army have rank, the army itself does not.
Also, I know what the differance between promotions and upgrades are.

I believe that armies created by leaders are regulars, and armies created by the Military Academy, provided the MA city has a barracks, are veterans. In the unlikely event that the MA city doesn't have a barracks, I believe that an army produced by it would be a regular. The experience of the army itself has no effect, so far as I know (though perhaps it could affect retreat odds) and I've never seen the army being promoted (although units inside the army can be promoted).
