Coastal Fortresses

Are they worth it?
I only built them when I was learning how to play, but they never were of any use. Anybody has really used them?

Well I've only seen them useful once. When an AI ship was passing by my coast it got damaged by my costal fortress. There not very useful I just build them for lack of anything better to build.

Coastal fortresses are as worthless as the manual. Don't even bother with them.

The only remotely worthwhile time to build them would be if the city is on a one-square-wide chokepoint and the AI needs to use that chokepoint a lot. However, because the fortress is the first thing to go in a naval bombardment, don't expect it to last very long if the AI is coming after that city.

i agree with all of the above, but just wanted to point out that they have no miantenance cost.

so if you have a fully develop city and dont need any more units, what the hell, buid one. dont cost nothing, except the shields to build it.

I find that by that stage of the game, I'm better off producing wealth...

Yes, well atleast that is one bombardment not destroying something useful and therefore I sometimes build them in somewhat productive coastal cities that might theoretically get bombarded. I can't remember a single time when they'd have been of any real use, though.

I've always built them... more or less cause I like to have everything you can possibly have in a city... wether you need it or not (keepin the sweet excess of Rome alive!) but for the first time ever a couple days ago I saw one of my coastal fortresses actually fire and hurt an enemy ship.. I was stunned (seeing as how I didnt think they ever did anything) but a lil damage is a lil damage in my book.. and I'll keep building them. If only for the sheer hell of it!

I don't bother until I am actually being bombarded by the comp and since that had never happened, i've never built one.

Costal Fortresses bombard?!? I thought that they were just a canon sponge. Seriously, I've been playing since this game came out and I've never seen one fire! They are so cheap though that I use them as a buffer to prevent other stuff from being destroyed.

They bombard passing enemy ships. I've only seen it happen once though.

They're all but useless I think, i've seen them attacks maybe once or twice; all they really do is protect against that initial AI bombard attack.

I play on land maps, and I've never seen an enemy ship more powerful than an iron clad, but I usually build a coastal fortress in my cities near where border meets the coast or island cities just for deterrent. I've never seen them fire though, and since I give cannons and artillery lethal sea bombard they're not really necessary But as someone said, there's usually a point at which cities have nothing better to do and they're maintainance free.

Best improvement in the game! Once one even fired at a ship and reduced it one hit point. It was worth the two hundred and seventy four i built. Of course i am also fond of Outposts and have one in the mountains now as i write.

I never build them, I'd rather use Arty with a good rail system. It seems to work much better.
