Wink Anybody ever seen this happen? (LONG!)

I'm playing my third Regent game as a learning experience. I didnt expect to win it but to gather tips and see how the AI has improved at this level compared to Warlord. I played the Greeks on an Archipelago map with all settings on Random. This is in Conquests. For the first time I put Wonder Victory on for the hell of it.

Now I got an island. The island is about 25% grassland/plains/hills with 75% tundra. Most of it unforested. On the plus side I had a very large Freshwater lake to boost my cities' population. There's a handful of mountains, no volcanoes, three tiles of Jungle and four of marsh. A bit poor really. I expected to get soundly thrashed.

As I expected I got wonder cascaded in the Ancient era with me gaining a couple of wonders while the AI built four or five between them. I met the Scandinavians with whom I had a couple of tit-for-tat very low key wars. Not a lot else happened. I researched as normal and started Sun Tzu's and Leo's Workshop fully expecting not to get them. Lo and behold I built both of them - alarm bells began to ring. Then I had a Palace pre-build for Sistine Chapel going. I built that as well. I was getting a bit worried by now. The Scandies hadnt found anyone yet and its 1450 AD! What the? Then I remembered I'd forgotten to build an Embassy with them.

I did so and instantly got comms with most other civs (slaps forehead) fully expecting to be in the doldrums tech wise. To my utter and complete suprise the Americans are still in the Ancient Era as are the Babylonians and the Persians!. I am nearly a half-era ahead of everyone else in techs!

Not only that but virtually nobody has any strat resources! One horse and an Iron is all I could spot in the capital's resource box - and that's for ALL CIVS!

I have *never* been this far ahead - even in my Chieftain days. I have a sneaky feeling that the map is something like one big Ice Age and everyone is on a tiny island or something with little to no decent terrain!

I thought it was really bizarre that I had got all those wonders and it was the 1400's and I *still* hadnt seen any Caravel's or another civ anywhere.

I really want to see this map in its entirety! This is turning out to be one bizarre game of civ...

The Humans are equal to the AI bonus wise, so its just the human brain triumping over a computer.

Be happy i think the islands also hampers the ai's at getting contact and trading techs fast enough.
For the resources. I observed sometimes a quite strange behavior in the ai: Sometimes an ai don't connects a resource even when its close to their city and they have the tech needed. In one game i saw that the russians had a lubber right near one of thier cities in the jungle. This city wasn't improved much, and the rubber was never connected. They had no war with their neighbors (the indians, i took them out before going for russia) and had replacable parts quite a long time (20 turns? even more? not sure about it. But i took them over with modern armors, and were talking about a huge pangea monarch game). As i conquered them i saw a lot of guerillas, but they never though of connecting this rubber. Weird, i don't understand till now...

Well I've got the whole map. I think the problem was that a lot of the civs were isolated from each other so couldnt intertrade. Therefore their science was really poor since its the only way the AI can keep up with you.

Once I found everyone and traded comms boy did they sure catch up fast! Now they've gone from almost an entire age behind to just a few techs behind in a very short span of time.

It doesnt really matter since its far too late to get anywhere cos I had to do almost all the research myself. Consequently I'm just researching Replacement Parts and its past 1900AD. No chance of a Space Ship victory and no time for Dom or Conquest since everyone is more or less on a par with me units wise. I've got 17 of the 29 wonders however but I didnt know you had to build or capture all the wonders

So its either Diplo (which I MAY just about make) or a Histograph win. Since I've been in a score race with the Germans that required some wars to get on a par I think I'll have earned a Histo win.

The Germans declared war on me the turn after I'd emerged from Anarchy and into Democracy. Luckily I had three MPP's going at the time. The Germans are a fair bit behind in tech so I'm not too worried. I'll just have to make sure I dont get too many units killed. Already had a German Med Inf take out 2 Crusaders and almost an Elite Knight . Dang Knights took out a Hoplite too fortified on a mountain then died to the Warrior underneath him - weird RNGville!

I've iced the Americans (they only had 3 cities). And taken out all but one Babylonian city. Mainly to get some luxuries since I had none at all. They were pretty tough opponents despite being a fair way behind in tech. My Cavalry regularly got soundly thrashed by his Pikemen.

Hey ho, I'm on cruise control for the UN or a histo win right now. The Germans have too much territory for a pre-tank war to be anything but a waste of time IMO.

Interesting game! I'll post my current save tomorrow. I dont have a 4000BC save - sorry. Cant I post my save, you play a turn then you can do that "use last map" option to start a new game with the map? Anyone tried that?

OK. I never got round to submitting my save but I just won the game by a Diplomatic victory. The game was simply the way it was because the AI couldnt intertrade for ages. Weird game, I led the tech race from the start which is quite something for a Regent game and only my third attempt.

If anybody is interested in the save give us a reply and I'll upload it to my webspace. If not, well, c'est la vie...

Id like the save, along with a turnlog to re-create your game.

A turnlog is a detailed log that you keep of every turn. (or, as detailed as possible).

OK. here's the save:

http://gr3yh4wk.50megs.com/Files/Greeks4000bc.sav

File size is over 3.0MB in size. I have no idea why but all the autosaves are huge.

File sizes are larger because autosaves are (or should be) uncompressed.

Should also depend on map size, number of civs, units in play, et cetera. When you play a standard size map, you should usually have an autosave that is about 2,500KB (2.5MB) for each turn.
