Sweating Bullets, WWI style

Alright, I've had a long and [relatively] sucessful game as the Scandinavians in PTW going. I early on conquered the English, who ruled all of our small continent except for six small towns of mine, then I conquered the far more advanced Chinese once I had berserkirs, then I conquered the weak Spanish, and now, it's the 1800's, and I'm on the 'second echelon' of technology. A ways behind the leaders, and way ahead of everyone else. Sadly, the Koreans are on the continent of the Chinese who I conquered, and they had declared war on me. Now, they had infantry, I had riflemen and cavalry. I've regained the cities I lost, but only after maybe six or eight turns, and they now have planes and tanks. I'm still at Riflemen. Luckily, luck is on my side, and they have yet been able to send a force strong enough to do serious damage to me, even with the three tanks they've thrown at me recently. So, I have been at a standstill, a stalemate. It's WWI-style in this case, though the tech is now moving past it. I've been forced to switch to Communism, and am just now able to use my factories, finally. How can it be possible to turn the tide on an enemy with a larger force, with tanks and bombers, while I'm still researching Replaceable Parts? I've been having fun with this game, and it's only the second stalemate I've even been in. I'm playing on Monarch difficulty [I've won maybe five times on this level so far] and... the Scandinavian advantage I had before is gone, and I'm stuck in an endless, useless War to End All Wars... can anybody help? lol

Once you get Replacable Parts, upgrade your cannons (you did build cannons, right?) to artillery, and bombard away! If you're really behind, you might want to set the tech pace to 0, and save up money to trade with your allies. I don't see a save, or even a screenshot, so that's kind of hard to tell...

As Chieftess said, cannons now and artillery later. Lots of artillery. When I get behind, artillery (defended with infantry) and cavalry can take out tanks, mech inf, modern armor.

It sounds funny, but I now expect a veteran cavalry to take out a redlined tank most of the time.

Before you get flight those bombers can be a problem. If you take out enemy border cities often they will be in there and you can reduce enemy plane count that way - might even do a little spying to find out where they are.

You should always put up at least a screenie when asking for help.

Do you have anything you could trade with the other civs for techs? Namely other techs, gold, or luxes? I don't know your diplo situation, but can you get a MA with someone?

If you do have to go it alone, is ToE still up for grabs? If so start a pre-build ASAP. As for military units, as CT mentioned, artys, artys, artys. Build a large enough stack of those, along with rifleman and some cavalry and you can take on almost anything.

If you don't believe me, check this thread:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showth...threadid=77319

This was an extreme example, with a very skilled player, but Zerksees really showed the power of combined arms.

EDIT: speak of the devil .....^^^

Sirian (I think?) had a Succession Game 2 years ago, called something like, "Musket/Arty Variant".

There's also a Musketeer/Arty variant here by Charis. Maybe I was confusing Sirian's Infantry variant... but I thought there was a game where they only attacked with Muskets and Artillery (there was talk about still building muskets even though riflemen were around I think).

BTW, while I don't build a lot of catapults, I really start building bombard units once I have trebuchets (50-70% corrupt cities are nice for those). After about 20-30, I start upgrading to cannons, and hopfully have well over 50 (probably 100!) by the time artillery come.

But, until I get my new computer, I won't have many games in the industrial era (I'm religated to tiny and small worlds). So, I have dozens of Trebuchets and cannons.

Like everyone else said when you get RP, I use arty, you can take tanks and inf with cav. just fine if you redline them with arty first. I've had games where I've had 100-200 of them

No. That one is too recent, and that wasn't even a succession game.

Sadly, ToE is gone. Also, I dont have any idea HOW to send a screen, I'm sorry. I'll try to learn later. But... they are really ahead. However, they won't be able to take my land anytime soon, luckily. But the things you said for me to do were great, I appreciate it!

To take a screenshot, press the "Print Screen" key, and paste it into a paint program (i.e., Paint, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro), and save it as a jpg or gif file.
