I just bought civ3 game of the year edition and it won't start.

This is mac os x 10.3.3 on an g4 ibook (933mhz) with 640MB of ram.

Do you have Open GL and CarbonLib installed as well? I know I had to install them when I first got Civ3.

aren't those included with 10.3.3? i don't even see versions to download for 10.3.3 just the combined update that did it for me

Probably, I was using OS 8.6 when I first got Civ3. Have you tried trashing the the first install and reinstalling?

Does the crash happen as it's starting up, or later, when you try to start a game?

My guess is you have a corrupt copy of the installer. The crash indicates it's trying to process the Citizen data, which is in the game file. If so then either that file, or the code that's doing it, is corrupted. The reason for my question is that I don't expect that processing happens until you try to open or start a game.

@Dojoboy: You're showing your computer's age. OpenGL is built into OS X. CarbonLib was the glue needed to allow OS 9 and below to run Carbon applications, compiled to run in OS X.

Actually, I'm showing more my ignorance. That computer (iMac) is now sitting to my right which my son plays SWGB on. I'm in front of a rather new (Aug. '03) eMac. For as much time as I spend at my computer, I'm still deficient in many ways.

Your crash log hints to me that the install is either incomplete or corrupt. If you're tried multiple installs and still have problems, then it could definitely be that you've got a bum CD.

Did you try trashing you Civ preferences between installations? I don't think the installer replaces them, so you could be suffering from corrupt prefs left over from your previous installations or bad CD. There are two prefs files, both in your home directory/Library/Preferences. One's called 'com.westlake.Civ3.plist' the other is 'CivIII Preferences'. Try trashing them both.

And no doubt you've also repaired privileges? I'm running our of ideas here.

I s'pose it's conceivable that, if you got the replacement CD from the shop where you bought the previous one, they gave you another from the same bad batch?

Is there any way you can try installing from the same CD onto another Mac. That would tell us whether it's CD-related or specific to your Mac.

It was compusa so I guess it could be the same bad cd batch but with the same error i doubt it's just a scratched bad cd.

"Repairing privileges" is the new "rebiulding desktop", if you are old enough to remember the ancient rites we used to have to invoke to get our old Macs to behave.

You repair privileges on OS X by starting up from the OS X CD and when the installer comes up you go to one of the menus (File?) and select Disk Utility. There's also a Disk Utility on the hard drive in /Applications/Utilities, but it can't repair your start up drive, so that's why you run it off the CD. In the Disk Utility window there's an option to repair privileges. Run that, then reboot and see if it does any good. No guarantees - it's one of those magic incantations that wise old Mac-heads utter when things are not working quite right, so who am I to doubt it?

could it be a filesystem issue? i'm running ufs not the macfs filesystem.

Dunno. It's possible. I don't know how well Carbon applications interface with nfs. It has never occurred to me to use anything but HFS. Why use nfs?

i'm a big linux/unix guy and ufs is just familiar to me, i'll try reinstalling with hfs and go back to 10.3.2 and see what happens.

'Bout the only thing I know about nfs is that it's case sensitive where HFS isn't. I'm pretty sure that'll cause problems somewhere along the line, as people have probably been cavalier with file name cases in lots of Mac apps.

Civ3 derives from Windows code, and Windows is not case sensitive either. In fact it often seems to change the case of filenames deliberately, on a whim. So maybe you're on to something.
