Ok this post is in progress but if you know what you are doing here are drivers that will fix you civIII refresh rate problems. I wrote these drivers at 3 am so please send any bug issues or if you want a custom driver for you monitor email me ALL the specs for your monitor and I will see what I can do.
If you do not see a link for the file email me I'll send it to you. and yell at the webmaster of this site to put the link in. I do not work for infogames, just a concerned Civ loving Programer warnkpr@hotmail.com These instructions are based on WinXP Pro, I no most of you don't have XP Pro so if some of the more tech guys on this site will make instructions for other OS it would help everyone. Tell infogames/Firaxis I would be happy to work on the other bugs, ... for a small fee hehe Step1 rename the file olderdrivers.inf Step2 Right-Click on the desktop and go to properties Step3 Click on the settings tab Step4 Click on Advanced Step5 Click on the Monitor Tab Step6 Click on Properties Step7 Click on Driver Tab Step8 Click on Update Drivers Step9 Select Install from list or specific location Step10 Select do not search. I will choose the driver to install Step11 Uncheck Show compatible hardware Step12 Select Have Disk Step13 Select the renamed inf file Step14 Select Standard Monitor Types Step15 Be carefull you no your monitor best, I add as many monitor types as I could think of best choose is 1024x768 @ 60Hz this worked for most people Step16 Reboot Step17 Play Civ until 3 or 4 am have fun!

Thanks! This completely solved my problem of having CIV III play the intro movie and then the screen would go blank. I built a new PC loaded with Windows XP but I am using my 7 year old Gateway 1776 monitor. XP designates this as a 'default monitor' and I could not find the .inf file for this monitor anywhere, but your driver did the trick. THANKS!

Help Please
I downloaded the drivers here, and they work great for Civ 3, thank you. The problem is, however, that I need 1156x for another game/program which cannot be played with this new setting. I don't want to uninstall this setting, and put it back to the way it was when you couldn't play Civ3 before, but I really really need this other program to work.
Please help. Thanks, Peter |

I'm placing this very old thread TTT. This fix has worked for time and time again.
For us with older monitors, this .inf file works everytime. I used this fix back last year. However with the new Nvidia drivers that came out, it overwrote my monitor settings. It took me an hour to find this thread. MODS maybe place a sticky on this thread since the new Nvidia drivers have come out, others might be looking for this thread... Mike |

Yep
Yes, its useful. I actually just came back to Civ III after a few months away. Although I never got it to work with the larger resolution as I requested above, its ok...just got this stupid sound looping problem when I get in a diplomacy screen or some other major events it just eats up my memory making the game go too slow until it just crashes...but I guess no one can help me. : (
