Capital Defensive Bonuses

I've always noticed that the capital always shows a 'city' icon when it is a town, and a 'metropolis' icon when it is a city. My question, though, is whether that has any effect on the defensive bonus of units stationed there. My guess is that when the capital is a town, it gets the defensive bonus of a city, and when it is a city, it gets the bonus of a metropolis. Is this right?

The graphics for the capital is always 1 level higher than actuality. This doesn't improve the defence value of any defenders though.
As far as I know it's just to make the capital stand out a bit more.

It's treated as what it looks like. A capital at size 7 is a metropolis, and is treated as such for defence bonuses and unit support.

Capital defense

If a capital smaller than size 6 is drawn as a city ( and not a village ) and defends as a city ( not a village ) does this mean that city walls are useless in the capital?

I don't think you can build walls in the capital. That's why when you build the Great Wall the walls don't show up in the capital.

If the capital alsways is drawn as a city or better, then of course it wouldn't show up with the Grat wall
