(illegitimate) deity OCC space race

I wanted to push my one city adventures to the limit, so I decided to see how far I could go with a really, really nice start location.

I created a random archipelago in the editor. I removed a start location from the center of the most densley populated landmass, and created my own little island. (See screenshots)

I gave myself 7 luxuries (forgot incense, or the tile I put it on changed to floodplains?). I gave myself 7 resourcse (no horses). I gave myself lots of cows and gold hills.

I made a large mistake in not putting iron and coal within the city usable tiles, as this prevented me from making the Iron Works, which would have helped considerably.

I connected the city to the ocean so that I could build Collusus and ships.

The resulting city is neither the highest possible science or production possible. One could use hills with gold + chopped down jungles with gems to get maximum science output, most likely.

I'm not sure what it would take to get highest possible production, but it would certainly involve Iron Works

There are some luxuries close to the city so that I could connect them early and get a fast start. Ideally, late game, none of them would be there because there are better bonus tiles and you could still get the luxuries if they're outside your city radius.

Map :

This is at the end of the game. The gems were on Jungle, where the city is centered. The Ivory, furs, and silk were on forest.

The game was not easy nor super challenging. One of the AI was killed off quickly, leaving 4 AI basically sharing resources for 6 people (remember I removed my start location from a landmass, but removed no resources). So I wasn't able to get easy money by trading luxuries or resources away. I think I traded saltpeter away a few times, but it was nothing significant. The AI I was really competing with- the Hittites, Sumerians, and Zulu, all had nearly full luxuries and resources.

My golden age came too early, I think. Right after building the mausoleum. And right when I wanted to switch to republic.

I was always slightly ahead in the science race, but never significantly ahead. I stayed at 100% science almost the entire game, making money by selling the occasional science. I never got good money from selling old sciences, though. I was selling sciences to the people I was competing with, so I had to do it rarely.

I disabled cultural victory, as that would have easily triggered before my space race win.

I was at war almost constantly. But I was able to defend myself well with artillery, bombers, battleships, etc... I probably killed several hundred units even though I only had about 40. I went slightly on the offensive a couple of times, when my tech lead permitted. Nothing major.

I guess the big question is whether or not one could do this without cheating. It would take a better player than me, I'm sure.

Heheh... I think it's completely impossible. I don't think the random map generator will put different types of luxuries that close together, or allow rivers to form like that.

I'll attach the map here. It's for conquests, the latest version (1.22?). If you want to make the city better, move iron and coal in to the city limits.

But really if you want to play a game like this, go ahead and edit the map yourself to control the exact amount of "help" you want. I basically wanted to play a OCC such that while I had fewer cities, I was not at a resource disadvantage, and the one city I had kicked butt

Oh and in the city screenshot, that's 1112 science. the first digit is cut off.

I think I might try and make an uber-science city next

I don't believe you could do this without "cheating", but a good try anyway. Trying it on Emperor would be a good challenge.

Hmm.. that's very impressive.

Like I said, it would take a better player (or in this case a lot of better players spending a lot of time thinking hard) to beat OCC on deity without some tweaking.

Map could be even better by keeping luxuries outside of workable tiles so you can increase production and income... I think I may actually try one myself

The only problem is the lack of rubber on the home continent, I had to trade with those warmongering Dutch, medicine fo some rubber, hen sanitation. It matters not as I was far ahead of the English and Celts tech wise, they were in the mideval ages while I was in the modern age, off course that is due to the fact the Dutch were at constant war with them and held most of the world. The Hittites and Americans were wiped out very quickly, although the Hittites holed up on a two tile island with a unit on the no-city tile. The English were down to one city at the hand of the Dutch (who were in the late Industrial age) so I brought the English out of the Mideval ages and all brought them into the the Modern ages, ahead of the dutch by just enought to build tanks I had rushed the UN that turn with my SGL and held a vote the very next turn before the English were wiped out, I had bribed the Celts the old fashion way, under the table with a breifcase full of gold coins The English voted for there saviour and the Celts, well, there was no doubt as to who they voted for... That was a very fun game, I might do it again sometime.

Here is a map that I have been playing a very good attempt at. The starting location when played has hordes of goody huts, so playing as expansionist is vital to getting a solid tech lead in the Ancient Age... good trading has kept me in the #2-3 spot in the tech race so far... and I have just jumped to the lead with the Theory of Evolution selling atomic theory and electronics to the top rivals. I don't think I have ever opened up my diplomacy screens as often as in this game.
