when do you declare a war?

usually, i declare a war at the middle ages for the first time. in the beginning i always pay attention to city building util i believe i will win .

I declare war whenever it needs to be declared, from a early archer/jag rush to never declaring war. I usually fight in the middle of one of the major miliitary ages. (AA, Early Medieval, Cavalry, Artillery, Tanks, Modern)

I generally declare war throughout the AA, sometimes in Medieval times and rarely after cavalry.

but you know , when you declare a war , you would prepare to fight for several turns as the AI never accept your sueing for peace immediatly.Unless you have enough soldiers...

All the more reason to keep the on! Even if you have enough soldiers, there is a random time between the war declaration and the peace talks.

Is there any diffrence, for your reputation, when you just start a war by attacking AI, and when you start a war by declaring it first (when you talk to that civ) ?

Most of the time, I will declare war right when I get iron, and plenty of swordsman. And expand even further, and take the enemies luxuries and resources.

I rarely get thru the ancient age without a war or three. Indeed, it usually happens when I'm isolated on a small continent with no other civs around.

I usually wait until Cavalry and Railroad and then sweep everyone.

If I build a little army at the beginning, I annihilate 1 or 2 nations. (for example, I destroyed Rome and Egypt with Greece at BC 1000)
And after AD 1000-1500 I start a big war, and when I captured a lot of city, stole a lot of money and resources and killed a lot of enemies, I will make peace.

And a little offtopic: If I would have a lot of gold, would the AI sell one of its cities? I have never seen it's sold any.

The AI won't give up any of it's cities during any negotiations except for peace talks. If you whoop up on an AI pretty good and get them down to about 3-5 cities, you can ask for any of the cities (except the capital) and they may give them to you.

As for when I go to war, I'm at war from the time I connect my horsies till I own my continent or win the game. I may take a break or two for government changes, and building up a little Infrastructure with Marketplaces, Banks, or Factories. Otherwise I'm always at war with somebody.

I first declare war when I feel I have a large enough force to take on whoever I am going to attack. Usually in the AA.

I declare war when ever I see the slightest chance of grapping a few cities. Or when the AI provokes me.
In my current game I was in war the entire ancient era that war was caused due to the AI building city’s on some of the ground that I considered mine.

I don`t think there are any difference . whether just start a war by attacking AI or declaring it first you are the invader,and this will take bad effect on you reputation.

but I think that in the AA you should emphasis on city building as it conflict with war.For example, at the beginning, I must build settler to enlarge my territory and something else like temple to promote my cities. So, I am not able to build soldiers at the same time.

In the AA when the AI doesn't have resources hooked up yet one city producing vet archer's might not be able to take a city but they will nab you any trespassing settlers

Depends. For example my current DYP game: I'm the second largest nation in the world (China has more area), and I invaded all of the 1-5 city civs. But I never thought of declaring war on the large nations on my continent. Like the Civ2 manual said (I think): Conquer the small, and make friends with the large.
