New and Need Help
This is my very first post, so obviously I'm new to the things people talk about here.
I'd really appreciate it if anybody could tell me in great detail what steps I need to take in order to add units that I downloaded off these forums (like Kinboat's WWI Legionary) to the Gold Edition of Civ3. I've looked at all the tutorials on the site, but after about three sentences I'm completely lost. How do you "unzip" a file? How do I get into the "C:// Programs/..." crap? Is there something different I need to do for the Gold Ed. (or is just the same as PTW)? Any help would be great. I just thought after my first few games I'd like to spruce it up a bit with new units like the Hussaria (since I'm Polish), but it's really frustrating not having a clue what to do. I'm sure I can do it if someone could just teach me, so can anyone help? P.S. Sorry for the long post. |

Welcome
[dance] to CFC forums; all your questions will be answered in time...Quote:
under the compression utility categories but first check in your Start-programs zip is a compress format=un-zip is the extraction of the compressed files... Quote:
double click it- C drive-Program files-civ-etc... ...and read the tutorials again. We all suffered that in the beginning and probably you will too but just imagine how it would be with no tutorials at all...good luck |

Hi and welcome to the forums!
To extract a file you select it and click on "extract" in winzip. ![]() EDIT: could you describe in even more detail what it is you are trying to do? Last edited by skunk; Jun 03, 2004 at 02:55 AM. |

Is there something different I need to do for the Gold Ed. (or is just the same as PTW)?
As far as I know Civ3 Gold is just Civ3 and PTW packed together in a fancy box. So no, you should not need to do anything different. |

Well, I downloaded Kinboat's "Industrial Legion" unit, Jimmyh's "Hussar" unit, and the Munit of BeBro's "Imperial Legionary". All I've done is downloaded them and looked at their files in WinZip, nothing else. What I would like is to add these units to my game, and make them UU's for the Romans.

In winzip do the extract action and tell it to extract into the units folder.
It should be something like this: c:\program files\infogrammes interactive\civ3\units You will also have to put a new PediaIcons file into place. Is there a README file with those mods? Post that text so we can answer specific questions. |

There are actually no ReadMes with the files. But what should I extract to the units folder, the .ini files?

The zip file should contain a folder for example: "Imperial Legionary.zip" contains "Imperial Legionary" folder. Extract this and anything else the zip file contains into the units folder.
By the way: the path is c:\program files\infogrammes interactive\civ3\Arts\units Once you extract, you will find the "Imperial Legionary" folder contains one .ini file, several .flc files, and maybe a .txt or .rtf file. the one I have contains a .rtf file that gives brief installation instructions. This I think is what alamo was refering to. |

Hey, sorry I haven't responded in a while. Haven't had the chance to for a couple of days. But I decided to try Bamspeedy's tutorial for adding the units, and I have a question.
Okay, when editing the text in the civilopedia.txt file, what name for the unit do I type in? For example, I'm trying to add in Jimmyh's "Hussar" unit, but in my scenario I named it "Husaria". What is the correct name that I should insert into the civilopedia.txt and pediaicons files? |

In your scenario you chose the civilopedia entry file (ie PRTO_Husaria) and the one you used typed there needs to be exactly the same, so I'm guessing PRTO_Husaria. Welcome to the forums!

Sorry, another problem. I started up my scenario (called My World), and when I went to select the new Legion for building, a "Load Error" came up. Here's what it says:
FILE NOT FOUND "Art\Units\Legion\Legion.INI" The game will now exit. I go into my CIV3PTW-->Scenarios-->My World-->Units -->Roman_Legion folder and it has an .INI file called "Praetorians". Somehow I got the new unit into the game, but now this. What's up? And by the way, GO LIGHTNING!!!! The Stanley Cup is gettin' a tan! |

Alright. I followed Bamspeedy's tutorial: created a scenario -> edited the rules of the scenario to allow my new units -> created a folder for the scenario (has the same name) -> created "Art" and "Text" folders inside this folder -> created a "Units" folder inside "Art" -> created a "Roman_Legion" folder, "Hussar" folder, and an "SAS2" folder inside "Units" -> moved the unit files into their appropriate folders -> copied and altered the civilopedia.txt and pediaicons.txt files in "Text"
In game, I have the option to build these new units, but whenever I click on them in the build queu, I get that message and the game exits. The game is picking up the changes I made, so the path must be right, right? Also, I changed the names, such as the unit in the "Roman_Legion" folder is named "Legion" in the game. These are all units I downloaded from this site. What should I do? |

A. Editor:example Unit:legion/ PRTO_Legion/Folder name:Legion/in folder ini name: Legion.ini
The name of the containing folder must be the same as the ini. exactly the same.spaces count! B.Pedialicons should be ANIMNAME PRTO.....Legion Legion so make sure that you use a consistent name thriughout to avoid creating a mess I guess the problem is that the folder's name Roman_Legion does not correspond to the *.ini inside.... hope that helps... |
