Wait for Battle for Middle Earth. That uses the same engine as C&C: Generals. Command & Conquer: Generals is way too short on its own so if you're going to get it get the expansion pack as well.

All the Baldurs Gate games. Buy them. Play them. Love them.
They are just the best games ever. I haven't played the 1st, but I'll assume it's as good as the 2nd, which I have. You'll play them for longer than the others too.

I'll be waiting for a review of Sims2 before even considering buying it as it needs to actually have some completely new ideas rather than just better graphics and some expansion pack features...

If you're interested in the Heroes of Might and Magic games, I'd say go for HoMM III it was the best of the series IMO (some people prefer II though). I and II you might have difficulty running on a modern PC and HoMM IV, whilst not a bad game was rushed out just before the publishers went broke and has a few problems as a result, for example sometimes the AI just sits there doing nothing until you attack it and win easily, which is a shame as it had the potential to be very good.
Of recent stuff I love Thief: Deadly Shadows, but it might not be your cup of tea if you only like strategy games. It's an FPS where you have to be good at being sneaky rather than just kiiling things. It's also where I stole my .sig from .

No it's not really a shooter, in fact on the highest difficulty level you lose if you kill anyone (sneaking up behind them and coshing them is OK though) and getting involved in face to face fights is a good way of getting killed or arrested, your character is not very strong, but he's very good at moving silently, hiding and running. I don't play on the highest difficulty, but I try to avoid killng humans, after all I'm supposed to be a thief, not a murderer
.
