"Rural and Picturesque"

I am not as conversant with American slang and idioms as I should be. "Something rural and picturesque" sounds quite nice, but I assume it is intended not to be. To what might Mr. Lincoln be referring?

Here's the deal: An important part of how Americans think about Lincoln is that he was born on the frontier, was largely self-educated, and spent most of his life in the Midwest, a long way (in the 1800s) from the relatively more sophisticated cities of the East Coast. There are many "rural and picturesque" stories about his early life, and many folksy stories, jokes, and one-liners are attributed to him.

Whoever wrote the CIV text was just making fun of this aspect of his persona.

But I still guarantee that the "rural and picturesque" thing he is thinking of is something very violent....

Sounded gramaticly terrible but otherwise fairly nice to me to. I guess Americanish and Australianish is more different than I thought

It needs to be translated - rural and picturesque = folksy & backwoodsy, eg, he's gonna treat you like you were back in the woods among the hill-folk well away from the limitations of civilization... not a bad turn of phrase if you want to threaten a foreign minister in a way that won't cause an incident...

*Russian Minister* "Uhm, I think I may have been threatened, but it sounded nice..."

To me it sounds A LOT like a scene from DELIVERANCE.
If you haven't seen this movie yet (old Burt Reynolds movie - with Dueling Banjos on the soundtrack) I suggest you watch it...
