Can't Click to Continue

Just to rule this one out - when you move your mouse pointer over "Click to Continue" - does the text turn blue?

No - nothing happens. The music still plays, it's the game's cursor, and I can move it around the screen, but the text for the button doesn't light up, and it doesn't do anything when I click on either the text or anywhere else on the screen.

Actually I did make a suggestion but then tried it myself and it doesn't do anything so deleted it!

But what The_J said makes sense

mmhh...try to alt-tab through your windows, maybe you're somehow not really in the game.
(i have to say that was a very good question)

And the rest of the DXDIAG please (doesn't matter if problems are displayed or not).

No, the game is running - I just can't get past that screen. And I'm not really sure why any of the DX info is even necessary when it's not a system issue.

It just sounds like maybe another program running has focus and ALT-TAB 'ing sometimes sorts that out, could also try the 'windows' button (next to ALT) and TAB.

One last suggestion...

Navigate to C:\Users\(your name)\Documents\My Games\
and delete the folder named: "Sid Meier's Civilization 5"

BUT IF YOU HAVE A SAVEGAME YOU WANT TO KEEP YOU NEED TO COPY IT OUT OF THAT FOLDER BEFORE YOU DELETE IT! (you should find the savegames in - C:\Users\(your name)\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single)

Then try starting the game

Deleting that folder allowed me to get past the ESRB screen, so thank you. Except now I can't play in full screen, which means I basically still can't play at all since I can't utilize anything that's underneath the task bar.

Oh well at least we're making progress! - I don't really understand what you mean by - I can't utilize anything that's underneath the task bar - Is the taskbar still showing when the game is running? - Have you tried ALT-TAB'ing again?

Sorry if this doesn't work as I have to sign off now but good luck :)

Yes, the taskbar is still showing up while the game is running. The top of the game window is partially visible as well. My taskbar is set to where I can see the bottom of the screen through it, but I can't click on anything behind the taskbar, obviously.

I really do not understand why I am having these problems with this game when nothing about any of my settings changed overnight - the game went from running without any problems to doing all this, and nothing at all was changed. Alt-Tab is not going to do anything. It's exactly the same whether I have other programs running or not. =/

i have the EXACT same problem! shows the top left of the screen, and now its regular resolution but i still cant click to continue. cursor works and everything. i have to use the task manager to get it to close. it used to work perfectly fine! i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game and that didnt help :( also when i do windows+d to go back to the desktop it shows the top left of the screen even more zoomed in instead of my desktop background....

did you ever figure it out!

I have the exact same problem too! Bought the game today and had issues getting past the Directx 9 or 10&11 bit. Solved that by verification. I got into the game and started changing a few options including resolution and now I cant 'Click to Continue'!!! I am 99.99% certain that this is due to a resolution/display issue. When I first started the game it was running in window mode which is why I started tinkering with the display options.

Basically, does anyone know of a way to reset the display options without accessing the options screen or clicking anything?

There's a GraphicsSettingsDX11.ini or GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini file at this location:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5
You might need to show hidden files and have admin rights to access that.

You can change the resolution there and save the changes. Maybe deleting the file (and the other 2 ini files there) is also an option, as they all should be recreated with the default values (if they aren't then verifying the game files through steam will recreate them (do a backup before anyway!)).

Thanks FeiLing that worked for reseting the options, I now have another problem...
Civ is running in a window with the taskbar annoyingly over lapping it. When I access video options and check the full screen option no matter which resolution i choose it just diplays the top left hand corner of the screen. if i accept the changes and exit using task manager the game will restart in full screen but then I have the problem of not being able to click anything again!

VERY frustrated please help

Just thought while writing the above that maybe it is somthing to do with directx 11 (even though it is recommended) tried the Directx 9 version and it started in window mode but then I changed the options to full screen 1377x720 (or whatever it is) and it seems fine. What is the diference between the directx 9/ directx 10&11 versions?

Guess this answers my question:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=381048

But i still dont understand why the directx 11 version isnt working correctly, im pretty sure I have other games that use it and work/display fine.

any ideas?

The graphics card is probably too weak (it's new, but not powerful).

And that other games work is not an indicator that Civ5 should work ^^.
e.g. there are people who reported that Skyrim works on their system on high settings, but Civ5 doesn't :dunno:.

Ok :( thanks for your response, I had a good go on the dx9 version last night and enjoyed myself so I guess i'll be sticking with that.
Just a little annoying that I cant run the game with optimum settings. Seems strange that my machine seems to be ok with the dx11 version if i leave it in window mode...

Kind of new theory on this, forgive me if im being silly.

I bought football manager 2012 at the same time i got civ and played for the first time a few days ago. When i boot up the game i always get an error message somthing like:

DXSETUP.EXE-Bad image

Xactengine2_4.dll could not be found or corrupt

I click ok and the game runs absoloutly fine. Ive verified the files and it says all is ok but it got me thinking:

Is somthing on my machine maybe malware or virus stopping dx installing properly? hence my problems with the dx11 version of civ5. I think I must have already had dx9 on my system as im guessing its a pretty old version but im not 100% sure if i had dx11.

What do you guys think?

I'm having the same problem as the OP -- "click to continue" does not turn blue when i click it; doesn't respond at all. I'm wondering if it's related to having the Windows desktop set to show UI elements 150% larger. That has caused problems in other programs in the past. Will try changing it and report back.

Yep, that fixed it for me. Try changing your windows desktop to 100% font size -- the default. If you've changed it to 125% or 150%, then Civ 5 gets confused about where your mouse cursor is. At least, that's what fixed it for me. Now that I think about it, I had the same issue with earlier incarnations of Civ 5.

FYI, changing the size of text items etc requires you to relog -- not to restart, but to log off Windows and log back on.
