Civ 5 suddenly experiencing random crashes

The game was working more or less normally yesterday morning. However, after a steam client update occured the following have been happening:

-crashing while trying to load saved games
-crashing randomly between turns
-worldbuilder crashing when it is trying to load up

I have verified the integrity of the game cache and the mods I am using were causing no problems prior to when this started happening.

I suggest starting an unmodded game and playing for awhile. If the game still crashes, you can rule out a conflict between the Steam update and one of your mods.

It started crashing for my brother as soon as he installed Windows 8.1
