Convert production into research or gold for faster research rate?

Well on the assumption that City X has All the buildings possible... basically what you build here depends on what you are missing elsewhere... What does this city have that very few others do...

if it is Banks, Marketplace build Gold

if it is a University, Academy, build Science
 
The only time I ever build research is if it gets a turn closer to getting a tech I'm beelining for. Otherwise, you really are better off building units.
 
Ok, I seeem to understand that I should choose according to what buildings that are in the particular city, but what I dont get is that it also depends on the rest of cities - so why is that?

say you have 2 cities,
the one you already completed the market and a second where you are still building it, but already have the library.

If you produce gold in the market city, you can move up the research slider, and it will benefit both cities (both having libraries).

Other way round, if you have already built the library here, but the other city doesn't have it yet, there is no point moving up the slider. Produce science with the library bonus.

Build a library in a city giving you only 3 beakers... 3*1.25 = 3.75 beakers.

Civ IV rounds DOWN all production, commerce, food you generate. 3.75 beakers will give you 3 beakers per turn, the same as what you had before you built the library. That library got you nowhere, unless you can generate more beakers (usually from the two scientist specialists that open up from building the library).

If a city gives you 14 beakers and 3 gold (maybe from your percent allocation settings), you would probably build a library before a market. 14*1.25 = 17.5 or 17 beakers (+3 :science:) after building the library vs 3 gold (+0 :gold:) after building the market.

Don't build a market unless you plan on using the +2 merchant specialist spots you can work because of the market itself to give you more gold so the market will actually help.
