Well, maybe not. But I never thought sex smiley was useful either. Or this one, but I never use it-

I liked the blush cheek smiley over the all red one, since the red one can indicate anger, and that's the way I usually inferred it myself. Like anything, with training, you can get used to is. For the real maining of it, the whole red icon might have been designed as a less than bright red, if it was going to be uni-color. As it is, I simply always avoid the red faced dude, since I know it can confuse people with the wrong intent. Not everyone, but some, esp. less frequent post readers.
