Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 140
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the 140th game in the GOTM V Training Series! This Series will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features from Civ5's expansions and DLCs in a friendly environment. Participants are encouraged to post questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads (described below). Each game will specify the Civ you will play and the Victory Condition to strive for. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread.

Must Read!
We would like to ask you to abide by our most sacred rule: Don’t replay any turns! If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. To ensure fair play and prevent results exclusions, please set your Autosaves to 1 turn. In the event of a computer crash while playing, just reload to the previous save and play it as closely to how you played it the first time. Please let Leif, Knowtalent or me know (via Private Message) if you experienced a crash and how many turns you replayed.

Civ V BNW - TSG140 Details:
Player (You): - Montezuma - Aztecs
Victory Condition: Culture but all other VCs are enabled.
Difficulty: Immortal
Civs/City-States (including player): 8/16
Map Type/Size: Rainforest (Continents)

Enabled - No Ruins, Quick Combat, Quick Movement

(Regardless of starting options, you may turn on/off Quick Combat/Quick Movement using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.279.
Game Requirements: Wonders of the Ancient World DLC, Gods and Kings expansion, Brave New World Expansion.

Aztec Unique Attributes:

Spoiler :
UA: Sacrificial Captives - Gains Culture for the empire from each enemy unit killed.

UB: Floating Gardens - +15% Food. Each worked Lake tile provides +2 Food. City must be built next to a River or Lake. It replaces the Water Mill.

UU: Jaguar - Fairly weak early-game military Unit. This Unit fights more effectively in Jungle/Forest and heals damage when it kills an enemy Unit, unlike the Warrior which it replaces. It also starts with the Woodsman promotion.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with each individual TSG -- Must Read if you are new to our Game of the Month!
Spoiler :
Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

TSG Announcement thread (this one): This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Once you have opened the save, DO NOT POST in the Announcement thread, even non game-related information. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread: This thread is used to discuss the game's opening decisions and strategies through the first 100 or so turns. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. We encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshot. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread: In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state your victory/loss date (preferably in the post title) and describe your path to glory in this post! Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

Results and Congratulations thread: We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). We will issue medals to the top 3 winners (based on earliest date finished). There are no long-term records kept for these results, they are just given out to top finishers to reward their efforts.

File Upload System
We have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note: you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends September 1st, 2016.

The save will be available for download on August 1st, 2016, midnight Central Standard time (UTC -6:00) in the US.

The Save can be found here.

But Hammer Rabbi, we are only going to abuse sacred shrines for a super quick win time. What dastardly trick do you have up your sleeve this month? I noticed piety isn't blocked...Is Shaka our neighbour?

SS is very risky, not only it's continents/immortal, you also get a weak start with no ruins, and it's very likely one of the AIs is going to get the culture from jungles pantheon. I think my plan for this game is Futurism + artillery rush to eliminate the culture leaders.

SS on immortal?

Its not impossible. The difficulty is "how close is the next continent?". In test games, if you can Trimere over to the other AI then SS is perfectly fine.

Personally, if I was to play like Acken or yourself, I would probably cleanse my starting continent, tech up to artillary and cleanse the opposing continent.

The jungle start means a chariot rush isn't wise, but outside of that nothing really changes which is why i was surprised there were no special rules.

I think the difficulty is getting it right on the first try. GotM is all about playing it through with no do-overs or corrections on ONE try. Living with the mistakes after being fully committed to a particularly fragile strategy is a gamble. But winning those gambles are pretty rewarding too.

This one didn't need any strange new settings. The Rainforest map setting was more random than I thought so it took some time to find the right one that wasnt too gimmicky and not too easy. I think No Ruins and continents are challenge enough to weed out those who can and can't pull off SS.

Good luck and I'm hoping for some interesting results!

Sorry for a potentially stupid question but I tried to search for an answer to this and couldn't find one: what do you mean by SS in this context?

I've been playing Civ5 for hundreds of hours in the last five years but I'm a fairly casual player (Emperor offers a good challenge for me) so I'm not versed in all the lingo even though I've been doing GOTMs lately.

sacred sites is religous way to get early tourism and finish the game before the AI can muster too much culture

Looks great!
Does the UB replace the regular Garden, or can you build both? If it does not replace the regular Garden, is it replacing some other building?

Sacred Sites is a Reformation choice from Piety. It is the earliest source of mass tourism when combined with lots of cities and the buildings you can get from religion. There are strategy threads on it throughout the civ5 forum sections.

Where is our faith coming from? I can't wait to bust the fog and find out!

Start the game already!

SS probably has a 10% chance of succeeding, if you can find sources of early faith & culture.

Just wondering about the sacrificial captures (gain culture from enemies killed) trait - does this stack with the culture from killing barbarians if we pick the honor opener? In that case the honor openere might actually be worthwhile, for once.

Might have to do a quick practice game before starting this.

It does stack with the Honor opener.

I almost always take the Honor opener as I enjoy hunting barbarians. I always have a military and it makes sense to gather culture, gold, promotions and favor with city states.

Hey guys,

I rekindled my Civ V love recently with the TSG games, have been playing them for the last few months (particularily enjoyed the Catherine domination game - TSG_136).

The only thing I miss from regular, self-made games are specific mods, like Info Addict, Religion Spread, Unit Path Viewer, etc.).

Is there a way to use them with these saves? Applying them before loading doesn't seem to work.

Thanks!

No, those mods have to be installed and used when the save is created and we don't allow (or require) mods in our saves.

Anyone have any thoughts on first moves? You can't really see much here. I'm not sure whether or not it is worth it to scout before settling? Or perhaps go settle on top of the silver? Any ideas?

I'm gonna scout south along the river with my jaguar before settling. But you're right, we really can't see much. I might just settle on top of the silver, to save all those turns chopping jungle to build a mine and send my next settler south after scouting a bit.

Just make sure you settle next to fresh water for a floating garden; doesn't have to be a lake, a river is good enough.

One thing to be aware of that the UU obsoletes with Metal Casting. So you may want to delay that particular tech.

I just downloaded the file and am about to open it. Unless moving my jaguar reveals something interesting I'm gonna settle on top of the silver, and scout to the south with my jag. Hopefully the river leads to the coast. Second city will be coastal if there are any fish, bananas, or wheat there. If I get to found a religion I'll move my prophet to my best coastal city instead of my capital; I like coastal holy cities.

I started an Emperor-level game last night with Aztecs and took straight Liberty instead of the Tradition/Honor mix I usually do with Monty. Then a great prophet for the finisher, and founded a religion on turn 75 with only one late-built shrine and no temples and no faith pantheon. (I got enough faith from a ruin to take Sacred Path.) I might try that here, just to be different.

I don't really expect to win this one. I'm about 50/50 at Immortal level. (wish me luck)
