I don't think we need to worry about losing to an AI that researches the UN or launches its spacecraft; a bigger worry for us is that we don't accidentially exceed the domination limit. If we were after a domination victory, we could probably wrap this game up in another 3 or 4 turnchats.
Ginger_Ale makes a persuasive case for the benefit that research labs and in particular the Internet wonder would provide us. He's right, of course. However, by the time we research through the Industrial Age and into the Modern Age, the game should long since be won. Now that we've almost expanded and conquered up to the domination limit, our task is to build as many cities as quickly as possible, and rush culture in them (using cash that we generate instead of doing research; and by disbanding units built by our productive cities in our corrupt towns). Our warfare days are largely over, as are our science days; now we're in builder mode.
