A late note of condolence as I haven't visited here for quite some time. I remember the remarkable results LF got in the GOTMs and his major contributions here and at ACS. He will be sorely missed.

    Adblock for FireFox

Not mentioned here so far is the invaluable, regularly updated filter text files many now use with Adblock - Filter.G from perceive at http://www.pierceive.com/filtersetg/

    Have you used RSS?

Same here. There are now many RSS feeds ranging from news from newpaper sites (e.g. The Guardian), radio ones (BBC) as well as games and computer specific ones (e.g. Firefox nightly builds).

    Reference Sheets

Although Freecol is an open source clone of Colonization and still under development, there are some extant data there that may be of use to you. Check out the sheets set out in: http://freecol.sourceforge.net/index.php?section=3 I found the terrain one well set out - just check that...

    freecol

Although still incomplete, the current Freecol 0.3 is playable to a "multiplayer win".. And re the previous post about it being different from the initial Colonization, that is not so as is apparent when you read the introduction at their website. Their first step is to get the game going...

Primitive Emotions + Advanced Technology = Disaster ?

I suspect that "getting nowhere" is just another way of saying that there has been a different emphasis on "cognitive failures" and emotions on the complex decisions process that humans undertake. At least we're agreed on this point. And I thought I agreed with this too. Where we differ...

Primitive Emotions + Advanced Technology = Disaster ?

The answer to your question is undoubtedly yes. Where we are at seeming odds is the relevance to complex decision making processes of just cognitive failures. I still maintain that interpretations of "high frequency of occurance in the past, recent occurance, unexpected occurance, an item...

Primitive Emotions + Advanced Technology = Disaster ?

To help elucidate this further, let's take a hypothetical scenario of a national security council meeting to decide whether to go to war or not. Which are the areas where cognitive failures would impinge?

Primitive Emotions + Advanced Technology = Disaster ?

But the point is that where the potential for impact on human affairs is greatest, it's not the cognitive failures (as you define them) but the subsequent steps in the chain of reasoning or processing that is important. And the latter part is where emotions make their presence felt.

    Accidental inventions

It's only sensible to lump discovery with invention. Accident is serendipitous discovery or invention only if the person involved has the presence of mind to notice the significance of the accidental phenomenon. Besides those mentioned above there's the discovery of penicillin by Alexander...

    Rugby deaths?

IIRC there was a tragic case in Oz where a junior player died from brain concussion after colliding with the goal posts in a local competition.

If CFC was a Company, would you Invest in it?

ie 51% of CFC Incorporated is worth 10c, and so CFC Incorp. is worth just a bit more than 20c. :D

Primitive Emotions + Advanced Technology = Disaster ?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that one can distinguish the sum processes involved with different types of cognition. What I meant with the purely "physiological" stimulus is the direct one of reacting to the visual cues as you mentioned in those two examples of visual errors. I am trying to...

Primitive Emotions + Advanced Technology = Disaster ?

? :crazyeye: Is some cognitive threshold been reached? That is my reference to the purely "physiological"! Please read the sentence carefully. That cognition involves not only the purely physiological perceptions like input from visual stimulation but also the processing of input...
