It was definitely patched, at least the game play, when I posted. All the updated leader traits and colonist options were visible (for example artists gave 3 culture per city instead of 2 culture and 1 health). It was a few days behind the PC version but not that long.
Crazy twist, my system is dual boot and under windows the game is broken post-patch but under macOS it apparently works fine with the patch. Graphics card is the nvidia 9400M on a macbook.
I think a slower pace gives some advantage when surprise attacking cities because the defender can't build extra units in the time it takes the attacker to walk from the boarder to the city.
Likewise you have time to do more conquering with a single army before key unit upgrades.
Another...
Me too. Worked fine before the patch, now freezing at the journal/map loading splash. The anger! Tried updating directx and nvidia driver and now it just crashes more reliably instead of needing a ctr-alt-del.
For early melee units I'll usually build spears unless I have a lot of iron so I can have frigates later. I always tend to have 2-3 units from the warrior line though - they upgrade frequently so I feel like I can always depend on it being a useful unit.
The exception is with Japan because the...
Sometimes I'm just not trying to become a warmonger by turn 40... you know...
I just don't like it when people say this is how you play Civ correctly and any other way is wrong.
No. They seem to like god of war/protection and the resource/improvement bonuses. Occasionally dance of the aurora or the desert one. Also I think I once saw Babylon or Korea take messenger of the Gods.
Thanks for the response I ended up doubling down on the buildings with pagotas and cathedrals and chose reduced cost missionaries and inquisitors. I'm up to about 70 faith per turn and still haven't built shrines or temples in most cities. I've managed to spend my faith as I get it and have yet...
If you set the sea level to lowest there will be more land available and you may find your neighbors start further away.
Also I'll sometimes delete an AI slot or two like playing a standard map with only 6 civs.
More forest (rainfall i think) is a mixed blessing. It slows down your movement...
What do you do when a scout or other unit is trapped another civ's borders and you're many many turns away from open borders (civil service)? Delete it? Declare war? It really pisses me off.
I will admit to buying tiles to trap enemy units  and sometimes to deny their scouts access to...
I used info from this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=469115
These are max values. For standard maps I made it fifteen but the algorithm was only able to place 11. Still not bad.
Playing on Prince, continents, standard game rate. I cheated a little bit and doubled the NW rate. Found Mt. Kalash ~ 6 tiles from capital. I bought a settler with the 500g bonus as soon as I got to pop2 and settled next to it. I chose +faith from NWs for my pantheon and now I have a 20 faith...
Samurai keep their great generals bonus (great generals 1, I think) and the free drill 1 + shock 1.
Also If you upgrade from a swordsman who already has drill and/or shock 1 or 2 than you get the next one. so If it has drill 1+2 and shock 1 and you upgrade it will automatically receive drill 3...
