Do vassals ever refuse your tribute?

I've had it happen at least twice, possibly three times. As an earlier poster suggested it is in relation to your relative strength. If your power ranking is relatively low compared to the vassal it is probably not a good time to make demands. If you are far stronger you can demand everything on...

How to make the game more challenging

Raising your difficulty level seems the obvious solution. Monarch and Emperor really give the AI a big boost. Raging Barbs, aggressive AI and adding a couple of extra opponents to your world also tend to spice things up a little.

    Epic or Marathon?

My current game I kept about 12 to start and now that my empire is closing in on 50% of the world am up to about 24. The pattern tends to be, too many between 1000BC and 500AD then not enough after that until I sack a capital or two and add to the workforce. I am playing a tropical game so...

    Game pace and Map size

Epic, standard or large size, add in 1-3 extra civs to get the action flowing. Did not vote in the poll because there was no appropriate choice (I play standard much more often than large).

Which religion do you found first?

At higher levels Buddhism seems almost impossible to get unless you start with Meditation *and* have a decent commerce square that you can move your citizen to work. If you don't have Meditation and/or a +2 commerce square to start the game you generally don't get it (unless you play very small...

    Epic or Marathon?

Yep, definitely wait until they build a worker that you can jump. Probably the third of fourth best aspects of this strategy is that I never build workers anymore. Literally never and have them almost as soon and relatively quickly in much greater supply than my rivals (especially if I can get...

    Epic or Marathon?

Playing at Monarch/Emperor population is capped by unhappiness long before war weariness becomes an issue (literally thousands of years before). The "eternal war" strategy really does nothing to change that as prior to 0AD only my capital is going over size 10 anyway (with or without war) and...

    Epic or Marathon?

I hadn't considered this but at normal speed, war weariness would probably be a much bigger issue using this strategy. I largely developed/expanded on it after switching to epic speed so don't really know how it would play out at normal speed. I think the principles all still work but it might...

    Epic or Marathon?

Far as I can tell, war weariness doesn't even kick in until you have a city over size 11 or 12 so for 90% of these wars I never see any war weariness. My cities almost never go much over size (12) until well after 0AD because I tend to whip pretty liberally (especially to finish off buildings...

Is there a point to swordsman now?

Swordsman are still my primary city takers in the pre-Civil Service era unless a UU is better. Axeman alone is at best a heavy attrition strategy if you plan on taking cities before catapults. This is true ven after catapults if you only have a couple and need them purely for knocking down...

General rule of thumb for # of workers?

As many as other Civs provide up to the point where I need to start destroying them because of the unit cost. I usually keep the first 10-12 and then take in more as the empire demands. After that, the surplus get deleted as soon as they are captured (especially since it costs money to maintain...

    Epic or Marathon?

I generally stay at one city longer than any Civ except the ones I am attacking. Another benefit of the extremely early attack strategy is that they go into a mode where they build only archers and workers as long as they don't get a huge surplus of archers (at which time they might try to...

    Epic or Marathon?

It is as much suppressing my opponents as it is advancing my cause (which can cause problems if there are a couple pacifist tech whores on an isolated continent as my continent tends to be somewhat tech suppressed as a result of these tactics). Here is the blueprint that I use (although I am...

How to start off the game?

My first 4-5 builds are warriors unless I can build fishing boats or I am completely isolated. Workers are for other civilizations to provide. I am usually at war with the two closest civs and the most threatening far away civ (tech whores or those with gems/gold/lots of floodplains) as soon as...

Am I jumping in too fast on the difficulty level?

I still try to grab the Oracle in most games because it is cheap, the extra tech can be really helpful (usually Alphabet well before anyone else has it which can be parlayed into several other techs) and the GP prophet points go towards my shrine or lightbulbing Theology (I try very hard to get...
