There is logic behind having such a huge number of troops stacked for mere pillaging. Should the group be attacked, it may very well exhaust the attacking units so that on the next turn, the whole group can go to another square and pillage again, thus using each turn to pillage and hoping that...
Wow! 78! Cool...I bet it was fun to turn against them and wipe them up like so much spilled milk. It was cool of the AI to use such a large force, but stupid of it to leave itself otherwise undefended.
