Make sure that you verify the installation files. It had an issue with the _DX11 exe for me, I verified the cache (in Steam/Library/Games, right click on Civ 5, select Properties/Local Files/Verify Integrity of Game Cache) and it downloaded a new version of the exe, which worked fine.
By far a net positive, imo. The audience is HUGE for Steam. You may not like it, you may not buy it. But projecting your biases on the majority [in this case] won't help your cause.
It was said in one of the podcasts that there are those four different "terrain types" or texture sets. That is what each of those folders is for, I believe.
MY guess is they are the same download. In fact, I ordered the D2D deluxe, and it just says Sid Meier's Civiliztion V as the title in my Games, even through the Steam receipt thing said Deluxe...
My guess is that D2D doesn't have the keys yet. Steam will treat its [paying] customers as first class. "Those of you in first class may now preload".
The rest of us (D2D, brick and mortar) will be coach class. D2D will get their keys when Steam/2K give them to them - then they call fill...
There is a difference. Pre-ordering on Steam will net you the Mesopotamia map. pre-ordering on D2D will net you the future first DLC. So, either a bonus now (Steam, seems to be a smaller bonus) or a bonus later (D2D).

My guess is that it will be out a few days before the release. The only potential a demo will have is to get people NOT to buy it if it falls short. A non-Civ fan is not waiting on the demo to see if he/she will buy. A Civ fan may be waiting on the demo to see if he/she will buy. A demo that...
That sucks that bnet2 had an issue for you, Empire. Frustrating, I'm sure. I haven't had any problems with it at all - nor with SC2 other than needing to set the framerate cap for the menus.
