When a bigger nation declares war on me, and I don't have the capabilities to destroy them with an invasion, I send my ships and artillery units and defensive units and do exactly what you just did. That softens them up majorly, and gives you the opportunity to really hurt them.

I say that instead of getting two free techs at the beginning of every era, you should get one free tech, and the opportunity to research two more techs with only a two turn minimum, and then it goes back up to four turns.

Just go back a difficulty level or two. Emperor is in the "Must be very prescise and make sure I do EVERYTHING correctly if I want to stay ahead of the game." category. I suggest regent. Everything is equal then. Except of course for the stupidity the AI brings to the game.

Most of the time, I will declare war right when I get iron, and plenty of swordsman. And expand even further, and take the enemies luxuries and resources.:)

I research Free artistry just so I can get Shakespeare's Theatre. But I don't research Ironclads unless I have researched everything else, and it hasn't been traded to me, and that's only happened once.

I think that would be great, if it didn't cost to much extra. I'm more interested in playing the game than I am in creating scenarios. But, if the price of the game wouldn't rise, then I think it would be great to include a scripting language in the next civilization.

If someone is threatening me or my family, I'll call the police. But, most of the time, they don't get in much trouble for threats. If it continued, and I thought it was serious, then I would kill the person before they did anything to my family or me.
