I just downloaded and installed it a month ago onto my steam civ 4, and it worked fine. It doesn't matter if you are on the beta version or not. I installed it to C / program files (x86) / steam / steamapps / common / civ 4 beyond the sword / beyond the sword / mods.

New player here too. For question 3 it really depends on how many civilizations you want in your game. I've played games where I went from 10 civilizations to 30 civilizations, and I've played in games where I went from 10 to 15 civilizations. I'd say prepare for twice as many civs are you put...
