I've seen the AI build marines, but they never use them for amphibious assault. I think once the AI learns amphibius assault they just treat marines like a longbowman upgrade. Cheap, slow attacker to slub on the bottom of the stack O' doom. I've never seen the AI build paratroopers...

My spearmen always win, but I have to pee my pants for good luck. It also helps if you rally the troops by barking like a dog.

This is a known bug, it was never fixed, even in the PC 1.29 version because it doesn't affect gameplay at all. It happens when scientific civs go to a new age, or when you complete The Theory of Evolution. I know, it's weird. Theres a related question in the PC Newbie Questions...

Sometimes the randomizer misses some resources or luxuries. I thought it was a mac bug, too, but there's a related PC thread in the strategy section. It happens, it's random, it sucks. :( Sorry, I'm sure that doesn't help your situation.
