Personally, I think you've misjudged Otto von Bismarck. He's a more interesting character than that, which is what made him historically dangerous.

I'm not certain about no state religion = atheism. I always just saw it as my villagers worshipping the mighty THOR! Or something like that, until a more enlightened religion comes in and converts them from their paganism :P But yes, there's really no point other than to keep other religions...

Right - how do you pay for that kind of expansion, anyway? I'm normally playing as Catherine the Great (Financial/Creative), and ten cities by AD 1 strikes me as being, well, really expensive to pull off. Is it time to abandon the near-100% research all the time? Or should I be focusing on...

Yes - I noticed interesting placement of Barbarian cities myself. I was playing the Earth scenario as the Germans. After dominating Europe and wiping out the Romans, I cast my eyes westward towards the New World. Floating over there I discovered massive Barbarian cities linked into nations...

God save the Queen - Brittania rules more than just the waves when Redcoats come out. However there's a certain pleasure in informing Kublai that, in fact, YOUR horde is better than his horde. Russian hordes > Mongol hordes any day of the week past 1450 ;-)

Ah; although DDR2 ram is indeed cheap now, some of us (cough, cough) are saddled with two problems. a) Living in Canada / other minor country b) Being cursed with RDRAM. Now imagine that you're that person (cough) and have to get more ram. It's almost cheaper to buy a new computer...

Yeah, it sort of gave me pause when I was playing Russia and here I was with these shirtless scouts and warriors running around the tundra in the early game. Seemed a little, uh, chilly.

Yes, they've really made upgrading a lot more expensive in this game. Quite annoying.
