To get mine to work I had to create a new gamespy account through the game (you can use a bogus email as long as you remember your user name and pass) just for the civ IV online. if you use a email adress or username thats already taken it wont work. once i made a completely new account...

I'm having the same problem, but only when I play multiplayer. I am also using a ATI Radeon 9600 and have 1 gb ram, hehe. I Havent seen any solutions related to this issue. I dont know if its video card based or what. Is your video card a saphire by any chance?

I realized why it only occurs about 50% of the time, its when I find them that it happens, which is odd. if they come across me first I'm fine.
