Is it possilble to leave plain terrain in the game, not using textures whatsoever? (as in CivII) This may improve the performance in low end laptops. Has anyone tried this?

Just let an allied city state take it. If you can destroy all of their units and lower the city strength, a city state will march upon it, conquer it and given enough time to slaughter its civilian population, raze it.
