I think it's just for expediency. Players don't want to slog through a bunch of 500 turn games trying to maximize score till the time runs out when they can win easily before turn 150. Sure you can use that as measure of 'best play' but players will automatically steer away from those type of...
I haven't purchased GS yet mainly because Firaxis didn't really address the main things I was hoping for. They did add diplomatic victory but sounds like it isn't working well. They just seem to be adding more and more flawed game mechanisms. I'll probably cave and buy the expansion...
Bummer - based on this and some other threads I probably won't purchase the expansion. The game got quite boring after awhile due to lack of challenge and it doesn't appear that they've done much to address it. The additions really just seem like bells and whistles to me if the AI still can't...
This. I rarely pay attention to loyalty and just focus on knocking out the capital ASAP in combination with a few satellite cities. I guess it promotes a little more military strategy in that you might have to divide your army but it's still pretty straightforward. I think loyalty would work...
Probably that there is a very clear and easy formula for victory: Survive the first 50 turns, build/chop an army (upgrade as needed), crush a neighbor or two and cruise to victory. Magnus and chopping overflow are a very close second.
I've also stopped playing the game mainly due to balance issues and lack of challenge from the AI as they just can't win in a reasonable amount of time. I'd probably give R&F a C+ if I had to rate it. It was pretty average for an expansion and I was disappointed that they didn't add any new...
If you got them right off the bat then yes it would be good, but the requirements for getting them with Georgia are arguably more trouble than the benefit is worth.
Don't get me started on Georgia - clearly they are the worst civ in the game and by a large margin IMO. All of their bonuses really only delay victory except the golden age bonus which is still just ok. Building Khevsur and renaissance walls are just a waste of hammers and research. Double...
Persia's movement bonus feels like an exploit so I don't enjoy playing them very much. The AI can't counter it like a human would and you can just declare on anyone at any time to get it. I think Scythia and Macedon are still better for early domination but it's close and on larger maps Persia...
I find irrigation to be useful early. I will beeline for it in some cases if I have a lot of early luxes nearby. I'm often just struggling with gold early on and this can make a big difference in the ancient era allowing you to purchase an additional builder, settler, or monument. It's an...
I ended up finishing a domination just before turn 160 which is close to my best. Scythia are definitely top of the pack for early wins right up there with Macedon. I just skipped Knights altogether and beelined straight for cavalry for mass upgrades, but they were really just for mop up. I...
Don't put the Mongols down. You should be able to crush them. You don't really need science and if no one is declaring war then that totally works to your advantage because you can stack the combat boost by sending trade routes to them. You can easily keep up in science using Raid + Pillage...
I hadn't played Scythia in a long time but they are just as powerful as I remember. I cranked up a game and got quite a good start with a few stone in range of the capital and some early horses in the second city. Basically went straight for bronze working then horseback riding. Even without...
Ok thanks for the response. I think I need to go visit the formulas page because I'm still not getting it, but looks like there's enough detail here to point me in the right direction.
