What will you play Civ4 on?

Hmm - Civ won't run on my PC laptop. Now I'm getting worried about my G5 iMac! I'm hoping it'll run it! (It's the first G5 iMac model, with the wimpy video card). I agree with other people that it's a shame that Firaxis designed the game to have such high graphic requirements, given that...

    Scripting/Events in Conquests?

I don't design scenarios, and I have little interest in doing so. That being said, I will buy the new expansion only if scripting is possible. It will add several years of playability to the Civ 3 franchise. (The stuff some people came up with for Civ 2 is truly amazing. It's almost like a...

Screenshot of the Day #97: Poor Gweeto

Hmm - when I posted this, it wasn't SOTD worthy.Check out this topic I posted all the way back in September. And Philippe gets the credit several months later?!? How unfair. Well, I'll just wait for a full and sincere apology from Thunderfall and full credit given to me on the main...

    Insert CD!

As a fellow laptop owner who's on the road almost every week and wants to play Civ, I have to agree that bringing the CD is a pain. I refuse to use any sort of No-CD crack, not only due to legal issues, but because I don't want shady software on my system (who knows what else may be there?) I...

    The Civ Board Game

Mostly repeating some things I said in other threads here: I've played the game four times so far. It's been lots of fun each time. We play the standard rules - there are also advanced rules that are a bit more "Civ-ish." From what I've heard, the advanced rules do have some minor flaws in...

The best way to finish Civ 3 (and PTW)

Very funny. Interestingly, PTW's release coincided with me ceasing to play Civ 3. (And I only go to these boards occasionally now, as opposed to daily beforehand.) I didn't buy PTW - I only read reviews and heard about bug reports. But when I heard about all the problems, even basic Civ...

    Civ3's random number generator

But, in a way, this already happens! Think of it this way - I send a swordsman against your 4hp spearman. One of three things will happen to your spearman: 1) I kill your spearman. 2) I lose the battle, but cause damage 3) I lose the battle, and cause no damage. Whenever #2 occurs...

    Civ3's random number generator

However, you're not going to roll a fair die 100 times and get 100 6's in a row. The odds are (1/6)^100 of this particular event occurring (yes, and (1/6)^99 of 100 of anything in a row). This is a 1 in 6.5*10^77 chance. How big is this number? Just to put it in perspective, suppose you...

    Civ3's random number generator

I was with you for a while. (I didn't agree with all of your comments - such as "Mathematics is not like nature" when mathematics is a remarkably good model of how nature acts. But I understood your points). But I lost it on the italicized point - How would less randomness make it more...

    Civ3 Limericks

Multiplayer technology? Firaxis owes me an apology Until they take out each bug I'll say with a shrug "Let's go play Age of Mythology"

Does anyone know why Firaxis chose squares instead of hexagons for the map grid?

Why no hexes? I offer my opinions: 1) Casual gamers will go "AAAAHHHH!!" and run screaming from any hex game. 2) Without the grid turned on, you'd get somewhat confused with hexes. 3) They probably didn't think of it with Civ 1, which leads to: 4) That's the way they've always done it...

    Why Vanilla Civ3?

Civ 3 is "vanilla" because it's the most popular Civ. :) If I had to give PTW an ice cream flavor, it would be "bubble gum," because it looks really appealing, but when you take a bite and chew on it (and chew on it some more), you realize you're much better spitting it out again.

Has anyone ever seen the AI doing something smart?

The AI be definition cannot do ANYTHING "smart." It doesn't think. No computer thinks (not even Deep Blue in chess). So the question should probably be "Has anyone ever seen the AI doing something that appears smart." This may seem trivial, but it's an important difference, IMO.

    Civ3 with Civ1 graphics?

Does anybody else simply not care about the graphics or the sound? I play with all animations off and the sound down. (I've never actually listened to the music, I'd rather listen to music of my choice while playing.) Anything that doesn't add to the game's strategic aspects is essentially...
