    Less towns challenge

I usually like 25-30 cities in order to be competitive production-wise; enough to counteract the A.I.'s 40% discount but not enough to be cheesy. You might want to check out a vintage playthru I did that had regional constraints and the transfer of conquered populations...

[Civ2] I keep bungling my early landing attempts

He's probably talking about the black "double unhappy" citizens which pop up as a consequence of empire size. In your typical Deity game, extra red unhappy citizens will begin to appear when a civilization reaches eight cities in Monarchy-- so at that point you can either A) Slow the...

[Civ2] I keep bungling my early landing attempts

Yeah, Melth is kind of hit or miss (He plays a conquest rush, whereas I'm more of a hybrid player by Alpha Centauri standards-- I like J Chamberlin's guide over on Gamefaqs, which puts a heavier emphasis on turn advantage). Glad to hear your strategy worked out. Ah, on the caravan issue, I'm...

[Civ2] I keep bungling my early landing attempts

Ask some of the speed players about Smallpox strategy, too-- even the best "builder" play with infrastructure returns may not be fast enough for the goal you're trying to achieve. https://lparchive.org/Civilization-2/Update%2005/ Actually, Melth here covers the topic a bit (if you scroll to...

[Civ2] I keep bungling my early landing attempts

Your main problem is that Universities and Colosseums are terrible production sinks, eating up all your bonus cash from caravans. Once this happens, your nation's weaker industrial footing and lack of passive income really begins to catch up with you. Here's some suggestions I would make to...

Managing unhappiness from number of cities - premptive militia or later mitigation

Three police units, temple, then make a scientist at citizen number 6 or 7-- that often erases the rebel for some reason. In the early game it's important to pick the best city sites nearby the capital-- corruption from distance can destroy you, as can depopulation of your core cities from...

    GOTM201 spoiler

That's wild, what year did you launch your ship? I jumped over to finishing up an old modern age game of mine and it's real logistical challenge to get the Communist cities to celebrate (i.e. you really have to pay attention to the special resources in the city radii and the arrows received from...

    Deforestation

I like keeping one or two forests around in order to reach the most useful production numbers (5, 10, 20) when need be. They're especially important in coastal cities that have a lot of grassland; one railroaded forest can make up for three plains tiles if you don't have them.

    GOTM201 spoiler

Hey Major, I don't believe I've played a GOTM to completion before? I'm usually not big on the one-city challenges or arctic maps, but I do like games with interesting geography where I end up with about 40 cities. Yes, it's very chess-like to record your moves! I especially like to consider...

    GOTM201 spoiler

Might as well add the progress of my game; I don't keep such detailed records but covering the highlights can't hurt. - My first four goodie huts picked up a Legion, a NONE settler, Currency, and Bronze Working - Similar tech path with Code of Laws --> Monarchy. Game allowed for an instant...

    GOTM 201

I'm going to try this one as a casual game; so far I've gotten fairly lucky with goodie huts (picked up a Legion, a NONE settler, Currency, and Bronze Working), though the placement of my cities has been rather messy thus far.

What's the closest game to Civ II after it?

Nah, CTP had a lot of great features: No settler micro-management, not having to re-assign unit upkeep to particular cities, being able to group units, dynamic sliders for government overclocking, being able to save build-queue templates. Good stuff, but I'm guessing that most players didn't...

Analysis of when King Richard's is worthwhile

There's a scenario called "Discovery" on Civ 2 Gold Edition, which illustrates how King Richard's Crusade could serve as a counter-balance to the shield-scarcity brought about by the Republic government-- you might want to play as the Dutch and check it out. I think it would be worthy to ask...

What's the closest game to Civ II after it?

I've got something like an unofficial strategy guide for CTP1 sitting on my desktop; it's actually pretty good once you figure out the gnarlyness of the game mechanics.

    Is the term "r*****k" offensive?

It's impossible to stop people from grouping together according to racial lines as much as it is impossible for people to stop grouping according to national or ideologically ones. As long as individuals are robbed, attacked, or otherwise damaged by other groups it will continue. There is no way...
