Thanks everyone! It was probably just a bug. Now I'm fighting the lovely copy-protection systems in Windows (why is it so hard to re-install my legally-obtained game?). Hopefully next game will go better.

No and no... Apollo is safe in one of my own cities, and there are tons of aluminium in my resource boxes. All the cities were happy at the time, and I was at peace with all the other civs. I had lots of money and resources and people and what not.

No, the game hadn't been won yet; I was able to build the UN later and graciously take a diplomatic loss :) I will post a save tonight.
