District cost mechanics. A very questionable design choice?

There is a listed cost and an unlisted cost. The listed cost is you wasting a turn of research on a tech of marginal value. The unlisted cost is that if you do this too much because you just want to get rid of those cheap 1 turn techs, you suddenly find yourself with drastically increased...

District cost mechanics. A very questionable design choice?

If you are getting distracted into researching techs you have no use for, you already paid the cost of wasting your research on something frivolous. It is horrible game design to add in an extra hidden cost on top of that, just to further punish people for "going wide" technology wise.

Is it better to Raze and re-Settle? Or Puppet/Annex

Important note, if you get the Iron Curtain policy in order that grants free courthouses to captured cities, it only triggers if you annex the city directly.

Best unit in the game (for me): the story of an unusual breed

I've always defined munchkin'ism to be willing to do anything within "the letter of the rules" (or "game mechanics as implemented") to win or gain an edge. This includes abusing any and all loopholes. Before BNW, this could be selling all your GPT and luxuries for hard cash, just before...

    Isolated Start, what to do?

Well, it was never really a matter or winning or losing. The game was set on prince because I was playing with friends where one of them doesn't feel comfortable playing higher settings. Tried settling inland and managed to get a SV in turn 331. Definately room for improvement. My main issue...

    Isolated Start, what to do?

Sailing gets you to a single Mercantile citystate, but nothing else. You need astronomy before going anywhere. There are 2 silks on the map. One of them is in the 4th ring of the capital, so will get covered at some point if you go tradition. The eastern one has plenty of food, but only a...

    Isolated Start, what to do?

So I recently had the misfortune of having an isolated start. As shown below: It's a large map, setting was shuffle, from what I can tell it ended up as large islands with sparse ressources. To sum it up, I have a lot of Inland Salt (1 in capital), 1 dye in tundra, 2 silk, 1 iron and 2...

    The Overlooked Great Merchant

If the Commerce policy caused Great Merchants to have their own GP track, it might become very attractive.

    easiest way to gain faith

Do you still consider a sea-ressource start horrible, after BNW? Lighthouse now gives both food and hammers to sea ressources, making those tiles very powerful early on (4F1H for fish, 3F1H1G for crabs/whales, 2F1H2G for pearls), even without the fishing boats). If you have a new city with...

    Only four cities? Really?

But so would your total need of science for new techs. How many turns are you running a deficit from your newly founded city, before they catch up in science output, and again, before they start turning a profit. In a recent savegame I dug up, I was doing about ~350 science/turn just after...

    Only four cities? Really?

So the question then becomes, does it make sense to start founding new cities in the industrial era?

    Mechanics of City State Bullying

You definately do not have to be standing on their borders, and it seems to be a factor based on their current military situation and city defense. You can bully some pop 1-2 city states with just a warrior and a scout, but not if they are on a hill.

    Are science buildings overpowered?

Perhaps it's the whole "a few ranged units will keep me safe" that is messing stuff up, but honestly, for a sampling of 4 "specialized" cities, the production city, the cashcow, the science city and the culture farm. You'd get these values: The production city: This is usually a decent food...

    Are science buildings overpowered?

This is to all the people talking about how Science buildings are just fine. A strategy is to make a choice, where other choices are also viable. Do you ever look at your pop 12 city and think, I think I'll make this my :c5gold:-city and just ignore science buildings there? You ever...

    Micromanaging the City Screen

The real trick happens when you get your growth a little faster without sacrificing your production queue. Simple example: You have the option of working a mined Hill with iron(4 production) for more production or an unimproved grassland cow tile for more food. You have a food surplus of 1 and...
