[CTP] Kull's Making Cradle 3+ fully compatible with the CTP2 Apolyton Edition project (Cradle 5)

Holy moley! I remember checking out Cradle 2 many years ago. I wonder what it's morphed into these days.

[Col] New fan Colonization recreation project in development announced!

I have some knowledge and experience to share on a few of these questions: In turn based 4X games such as Col, Civ, etc., how important is multiplayer? How many people play them in multiplayer mode (where available) vs. single player mode? Are they as fun in multiplayer as single player? In my...

Open source rewrite of the original Civilization game (1991) - OpenCiv1 Project

It's easy to romanticize old games, but they were often hacked together by people under time pressure who didn't always remember what they were doing.

[Col] New FreeCol Releases and Maps Overhaul

Wow, FreeCol development really picked up in the last couple years. 13+ years ago, when I first ran across it, I despaired that it would ever reach 1.0... I played FreeCol before I even played the original Colonization, even though I was into retro-gaming already then.

    C-evo Distant Horizon

I am not yet experienced enough with programming to want to fork the project myself, nor do I think a 4th fork would do anybody much good. But maybe I should go liven up the official C-Evo forums...haven't been there in a while.

    C-evo Distant Horizon

I've been an appreciator of C-Evo for many years. Much better balanced and designed than Civ2, and even Civ3. I recently played a long game of it and found myself wishing for two "quality of life" improvements: - Movement Cost indicator. Trying to guess how far a unit can get on a rail...

[Col] Settle The World (Colonization like fan game for the Amiga)

The graphics look halfway between Col's and an old JRPG, and that's not a bad thing. But yes, an AI...that is the trickiest part of these games. It's comparatively easy to define systems, but a decision-making engine?

    City happiness calculation algorithm

This is...very complicated. I had no idea that it wasn't just some simple arithmetic. No wonder there could be some weird effects.

[Civ2] Civilization II MGE User Interface Additions (CIV2UIA)

Are you seriously using the Chewbacca Defense to declare that the "2 luxuries make angry citizen happy" bug isn't a bug because you happen to like it?

[Civ2] Civilization II MGE User Interface Additions (CIV2UIA)

The .cue file has 12 audio tracks listed on it. The .bin file claims to be 699MB Should the soundtrack appear as .wav files? (image contains none) Or is it all compressed in a .cab? (data1.cab is 55MB and the only sizeable file that isn't one of the movies) Or would they not appear as discrete...

[Civ2] Civilization II MGE User Interface Additions (CIV2UIA)

It looks like you're probably right, Blake. I have a .bin and .cue file, and mounting the .cue, I got a prompt from the OS for what should be done, but "play CD" wasn't an option. When I had Media Player Classic try to open my D: drive (which is what the .cue was mounted to) I was treated to a...

[Civ2] Civilization II MGE User Interface Additions (CIV2UIA)

I was playing a game recently that was an old save I found from many years ago in my first forays into the higher difficulty levels. This was with the MGE aggressive AI, and my civ (Russians) was under constant attack from everybody it made contact with. Resuming play with the fixed Diplomacy...

[Civ2] Civilization II MGE User Interface Additions (CIV2UIA)

Nostalgia just called me back to Civ2, and I was very pleased to see that your wonderful Civ2 UIA project has been given new updates. The GOTO lines and the City Trade-Paths are especially welcome, since in the last game I had left off on I had been struggling to figure out where to put the...

The core of 4X games "boring endgame problem" - a short essay about Rapidly Increasing Complexity

One common failure of "Automation" systems to reduce micromanagement is that they are often worse than what a skilled player can achieve with clever orders. Bad automation is almost as bad as no automation, since it simply won't get used. So you need to make sure that any Automated system is...

    Developer Screenshots

That looks like a dither map like what was used for tile borders in Civ2. My guess is that Civ3 doesn't actually use that graphic at all.
