More as disposable attackers. It's sometimes possible to direct an ally/vassal so they soften up a mutual enemy, then swoop in and take cities before they do. Works especially well in the medieval age because one is unlikely to get far without the right numbers of siege and cleanup; AIs notoriously get the ratios wrong.

Vassals and colonies are a lot more attractive on Deity - the bonuses go a long way to compensate for AI idiocy.
