Coolest thing you have ever done.

warpus- That's quite cool. And I'm not sick of hearing it... glad you've been well these years. Coolest thing I've done? Probably canoeing across the US-Canada border under cover of darkness and only starlight. It's okay, it wasn't illegal since we cleared it with customs! Barring that, maybe...

Comings, Goings and New Arrivals VII: Quitters and Hipsters

Wow, lots of names I don't recognize and just as many that don't recognize me... Just wanted to drop by, say hello, and cheers, and that life has been good to me so far. :)

What Book Are You Reading? Volume 9

It's been a long time since I've read the series, but I think I remember the Inferno as being a long anthem of poetic, if not actual, justice. I seem to remember those souls present as being unrepentant, and but a single thought of regret was necessary for admittance to Purgatory, but I could be...

What Book Are You Reading? Volume 9

That was my impression as well. I was underwhelmed by Paradise since it's mostly described as indescribable. Personally, I preferred Purgatory to Inferno, just because the people Dante met in Purgatory seemed to me to be regular folks like myself.

What does Freedom mean to you?

Freedom is having the feeling of control over my own life.

    State of the Union

I'll agree that certainly the current mess isn't President Obama's "fault," but in a forward-looking speech, he's putting a bit too much negative light on the rest of this past decade. The mess isn't the fault of the president or the government as a whole, but I don't think it's the fault of the...

    State of the Union

The address was like a meringue pie. It looks good and is tasty, but then you realize you're basically just eating air. Talking about a budget freeze and new programs... I must admit, I was rather confused. At this point in his term, I think the President made a gamble in bringing up the...

What Book Are You Reading? Volume 9

Richard Rhodes - The Making of the Atomic Bomb This was a real page-turner, with plenty of detail about not just the Manhattan Project, but also nuclear physics in the early twentieth century. Obviously, I loved it, although I wouldn't expect the same reaction from everyone.

Has Fox finally lost there minds?

MSNBC didn't show it, either. :splat:

    The questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread IX

I'd guess, in your case, $1k/(1-15%) = 1k/.85 = $1176.47 Is that what you had in mind?

Your supermarket probably sells Karo syrup; I don't know if it's high fructose or not--you'd have to check the label.

    The questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread VIII

It's the Rocky Road to Dublin. My apologies if this did indeed get its own thread and I missed it. Georgia set a record for power consumption in a week. We tend to drink the grid in August when everyone has the air conditioners going, but the demand for heat and electric heaters and so...

Which movie(s) have you seen lately? - Episode IV

Not intravenously, as in The Sign of the Four. At one point, Watson points out that Holmes is taking something meant for eye surgery, which cocaine is... so you can take it that way if you so choose. If you're not looking for the coke, you won't find it; put it that way.

Which movie(s) have you seen lately? - Episode IV

Most recently, Sherlock Holmes, and it's good to see Holmes not being portrayed as the stuffy guy with a magnifying glass so many people think of. I was glad to see that it had become a movie, as I've been reading a lot of short stories (on flights and such) starring Holmes and Watson. Plenty of...

What Book Are You Reading? Volume 9

Moby-Dick; Or, The Whale has been this semester's light reading for me as well, and I've also found a lot more humor than I was expecting. Of course, I wouldn't wish it to be any longer. I realize that a whaling voyage had a lot of down time, but I think this book has too much of it. I think...
