when you are first learning the game, it is a good Idea to save often. Particularly before a big decision like starting a war. that way you can go back and try it different ways until you see what is most effective. be sure and set the preferences to stop at the end of each turn that way you...
I like this game, Ive been playing it for years. I keep an old computer around just for it.
The key to the game for me is the stock market. That is where you dominate your opponents.
The version I have is the original, so old it is on floppy disks.
I was wandering through the new BestBuy back in 93 or 94 when I saw the civ 1 box. it was an interesting picture of an egyptian sarcophigus under a modern city skyline. I had to have it. I didn't even have a computer at that point. I played it after work on my brothers computer. Civ 1 served me...
Best vets first, then elites. You shouldn't really have many substandard units in your stack. the few of those i may have are usually out on barb patrol or garrasoning a border town.
Also it is better to wait a few turns for new units to catch up than lose good units without taking the town...
Games in particular can be windows into real life. The Apostle Paul wrote of running races and fighting good fights. So I suppose that if Games can be a window into real life, real life can influence game play. I would like to think that Civ teaches me to be logical and to plan ahead...
It took me about 10 years to get my money's worth out of Civ 1. I bought Civ III about a week before they anounced the release of civ 4, so I never concidered a switch. Its going to be a a long while yet before I have played out civ III.
the "city about to riot " is one of the most usefull alerts. Saves me hours of micromanagement.
Also good is the alert that lets you know when there are new techs or luxes availible to trade.
And dont forget the one that lets you know that the AI is willing to meet for a peace talk.
A lot of new players seem to have this problem when they try to build everything a city can build. Only build the buildings you need. Spend your sheilds on settlers and troops.
I usually dont build it, because building it means a core city is not producing troops during the build.
Even with a leader I dont usually rush it as Id rather make an army.
