I think the civ's unique bonus and the wonder bonuses are much stronger than in the pc civ's. because of this the game needs specific limitations (size of map, number of players) to remained balanced.

cities with hills or metal/stone/marble lend themselves to production, cities with food resources can become specialist cities since there will be enough food to support them, cities near rivers can be financial centers since the tiles produce extra money....etc.

the first way to increase your skill is to learn how to specialize cities. most cities should have a focus: income, research, production etc.

i tend to first build a warriors (or scouts) until my pop hits 2, while exploring with my original warrior. after the worker is done i improve the land or resources, while the pop gets to 3. when the pop hits 3 i build a settler.
