Initial thoughts: SIP as the start has been edited to make it AWESOME. I might try Monarch/Epic though I will probably fail. Start by going Agri -> AH -> BW -> Fishing -> Sailing. GLH seems a good wonder to have, I will build that early.

I agree with you. I just hope the promised rivers that now flow through the deserts create floodplains that I can use instead of being completely surrounded by useless desert. I think I might try the adventurer class, since the GOTMs I've seen are more difficult than random games. Worries me...
