    Normal Starting Difficulty

Really? The second lowest? That doesn't fit the usual Civ progression. It's usually the third or fourth difficulty level. I figured for Colonization, it would be Pioneer, Conquistidor or Governor.

    Normal Starting Difficulty

I know that Pilgrim is the easiest, and Revolutionary the equivalent of Diety, but which of the remainder (Explorer, Pioneer, Conquistidor, Governor or Patriot) is "normal" difficulty?

    Over The Hump To Prince

I'm not sure I get you. You generated beakers in Civ 4 as well. But you had a slider. I always kept enough commerce to keep cash flow positive, enough happiness money to keep the empire happy, and then everything else into research. In Civ5, I always seem to have more money than the AI. But...

    Over The Hump To Prince

In each version of Civ, I have always needed a bit of advice to beat the game at "nomal" ability. In Civ 4, for example, you good people pointed out that I was not building enough cities by year zero, and that my research was to unfocused. But Civ 5 is here and I need new lessons. I do not...

    Getting to that next step

Is there any difference between speeds, other than a military one? As I understand it, the research comes out even, the production comes out even, it really only allows your military units to remain relevant longer. I noticed it when I tried a quick game (normal speed) to test a theory, and my...

    Getting to that next step

Yes, I see. That's a great point, especially if I am just growing a city and don't need more than a library or a market in it. While you can win without Parthenon, I like Great Leaders popping up willy-nilly, so for me, that's a game-stopper. The Pyramids - and early Representation - have...

    Getting to that next step

Zav - I will do that, thank you, great idea. Mac, thanks. I am trying to build libraries, to goose my research, but I have no markets, much less grocers, whilst trying to learn Alphabet. I usually finish the ancient era with all but Metal Working and Horseback Riding (unless I have access...

    Getting to that next step

Well, it is only my initial foray, but things are not going too well. It is 480 AD and I have eight cities, but my economy and production are in shambles. I have 0 in research, so Alphabet is taking me some 30 turns to discover. Even at 0, I am still losing -2 a turn, so everyone is on...

    Getting to that next step

Butter Phase? Are you referring to the Renaissance? Heh, no, a reference to an old line, regarding building up your economy. Do you concentrate on guns, that is, preparing yourself militarily for international issues, or butter, that is, worry about domestic concerns. I think it was a...

    Getting to that next step

Whoa! Thanks, all! Yes, I can see I was not REX-ing properly (had to google that, btw!) I would have only six or seven cities by the 1600s, not your suggested 10+ by 1 AD! Because my research would be going all right, I would win the game by 2050, or so, but it was always a squeaker, in...

    Getting to that next step

Great stuff! Thanks. I really thought I was building too few cities.

    Getting to that next step

I am trying to increase my end game score - and please, this is what I like, so no "Why don't you just play differently/go total war/do ..." I am a builder/expander kind of player, and do not go to war to conquer. I usually leave my neighbors alone, though inevitably at least one declares war...

    XML file for Custom screen?

Is there an XML file for the single Player Custom screen? I notice it retains some settings, such as the last difficulty level, starting era, etc. I would like to modify it, so that I can reduce the number of opponents, set the same opponents and just choose my civ with all the other settings...

    Specialists and Peace
