Problem solved. I upgraded my video card over the weekend to an (Asus) nVidia 6600 w/ 256. Apparently it was the ti4600 overheating that was causing the texture problems that eventually led to lockups.

I'll second the vote that it's a likely memory leak. One thing that I've found that helps when the game starts stuttering is to turn my machine off, and then start it back up. Haven't had to do that for a game since Windows '95.
