I go random. As for a slightly better player beating me I have to disagree. Unless the Zulu and or Aztec start very close to me I am good. We all know the cheeziness of those 2 Civ's anyway. If I am playing Zulu or Aztec I just slow down a little with the early exploration.

On the 360 version (Not sure of the others) you can tell when your ship will reach Alpha Centauri prior to launching. The more Fuel pods you have the faster.
