Is the Steam DRM just a one-time verification check? Or is it much more?

What about Stardock/Impulse? I loved Galactic Civilizations 2 and it only required a one-time activation of the game and unless I'm mistaken didn't require a monitor program running while I played GalCiv2. I'm sure Firaxis had their reasons to chose Steam but that doesn't mean there is no cause...

Steam - The 'somewhat explain it all guide'

Because it gives the game company (or their parent companies/future owners/etc.) absolute power over our ability to play the game as we want and the ability to change the rules anytime they want to whatever they want by updating the required Steam monitoring program. You did ask so here's your...

Is the Steam DRM just a one-time verification check? Or is it much more?

SecureROM wasn't nearly as insidious as Steam can be. Once SecureROM was burned to the game disk that was the version we all had forever. The Steam DRM/monitor can be changed or updated at any time - which is the base source of my concerns. It gives the game company (or the game company's parent...

Best to ignore it. Discussions of piracy are a ban waiting to happen.

I agree up to Occam's. What they have done in the past didn't include a required active monitoring program that starts and runs the whole time I play Civ and also has the power to prevent me from playing Civ.

 If we keep this up we're gonna need a big ol' group-hug. But she didn't explicitly address all of your points. She gave one general comment "This is, indeed, true." and then spoke of easily finding content and convenience and not having to have a DVD, etc. Of course Steam can...

Is the Steam DRM just a one-time verification check? Or is it much more?

Welcome back! I knew you would feel the love and want to re-join our little discussion. :) I even added Elizabeth's comment to the OP for all to see. But, she still didn't answer the most important questions about infringement or banning mods/content or the Steam client being able to...

Is the Steam DRM just a one-time verification check? Or is it much more?

I did tell it to them. Most of those threads were flamed until they got locked. As requested, a demonstration of why I think I am right -unless I'm not and as from the OP: Answer is common knowledge. Information agreed upon by everyone. Also confirmed here: Steam, like most software...

Is the Steam DRM just a one-time verification check? Or is it much more?

This was the most informative post I saw and the basis for many of the answers to the OP questions: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=9173380#post9173380

Thank you. Information is a good thing. :) Could you put our concerns to rest once and for all?

Is the Steam DRM just a one-time verification check? Or is it much more?

IMHO all DRM is only an annoyance to us honest users. The pirates always seem to break any protections that are used anyway. I would never pirate a game and as I would like to see there be a Civ6 (too soon?) someday I don't mind paying my fair share. GOOD DRM to me is only the lesser of the...

Is the Steam DRM just a one-time verification check? Or is it much more?

I agree that even if they did ban mods/content and have Steam check for banned material before allowing the game to start that we could fine a way to work around any such ban. If we find a way around the ban would we be exposing ourselves to even greater sanctions, like the game being "bricked"...

Is the Steam DRM just a one-time verification check? Or is it much more?

No, because the original claim was not made by me. All over these forums I read comments about how great Steam was and whenever that position was questioned and the more intrusive features of Steam were mentioned the response was often that the Steam DRM was just a one-time verification check...

@Chalks: Thank you for your constructive comments. :) I haven't "forgotten" because in the real world Civ5 players are unlikely to simply avoid using Steam. Isn't Steam to hold a monopoly on the Civ5 patches? Patches aren't just extra fun stuff, they are bug-fixes too and are necessary...
