Yeah, if you WANT to play a more defensive game (which tends to a science, cultural or diplomatic victory) then you usually have other priorities. (e.g. GL, HS, PT, ...)
It could be useful, but it wouldn't be my priority.

About Civ 2: wasn't it great when you went for those villages, plundered them and out came those eight barbarians? Fortunately, not all of them attacked most of the time. :D
Yah. It's only that I actually read the civilopedia entry before I built it. Doesn't bug me, it was just a funny feeling. ^^
Edit: hm... 2nd game, now as hittites: iron revealed and theres only one in minor asia and one to the extreme east as far as the map's revealed right now (upper third)...
Personally, I think cIV is great - but only with mods (such as Fall from Heaven II). When it comes to vanilla, I like ciV best AND there is much mod development as well.

Good idea of course, but it's cheaper to upgrade warriors. If you go for a swordman start it's a real blow if you have 4-5 cities without one iron source. ^^

Played it now and I like it. Two things that bug me however:
1) I think you should be able to upgrade warriors to axemen, just to give them some small boost in case your DoWed early and don't have iron available yet.
2) That brings me to another thing: there's no middle or late game unit that...
I liked the Idea of bronze or iron weapon upgrades (promotions) in cIV Fall From Heaven II. If you got access to iron and your old units entered your cities, they automatically received these promotions (bronze + ~10% strength, iron + ~20% strength).
