better to have no transparency than to see the background through the mech, IMO.
could you make it dark smoke over the mech and then switch to transparent?
one of the unit creators should contact the guys who make the 40K meshes for Quake and other 3d shooters. Maybe they will let you use them.

The best way to make a units_32 image is to take the first image of the default flic in civ color red, and resize it to fit. This way it will match up with the other units_32 images and will also be civ colored in the build queue.
good luck putting a team together, it is definitely the best way to go. just look at the DyP team. At first people scoffed at Kal-el when he suggested that a team would work better at creating a great mod than just an individual by himself, but I think we can see that the trend has been for...
that would be very cool, especially if it was made by aaglo, known most recently for all his amazing ships, but truly one of the premier designers of civ aircraft.
