[R&F] The State of Combat Units (Post Spring 2018 Patch)

Oh dear god. This is made so much worse with the 1upt function which presents more chances of their flanks being exposed. So you couldn't even use them for their intended purpose protected by a large stack longer than one turn because chances are the opponent will target the counter units...

[R&F] The State of Combat Units (Post Spring 2018 Patch)

It definitely makes high gold producing civs really strong, since you can keep a lump sum of money around each major era you pass and upgrade for virtually nothing.

Can we reframe the AI discussion

Change happiness functioning slightly (auto amenities via 4 largest cities is ehhh). Specific buildings for increasing local happiness yields based on local tiles or features. Housing should do an awful lot more than cap growth. Slums or urbanisation comes to mind. Really, housing is a...

[R&F] The State of Combat Units (Post Spring 2018 Patch)

Interesting. So is the idea that the Counter Calvary line is weak in terms of cost-effectiveness compared to the stronger, more powerful Heavy Calvary line? Specifically in the Medieval Era? I'm not sure how to feel about that. In Civ IV, Medieval warfare was a slog due to garrison improvements...

DLC business model hurting your company 2k/Firaxis

I'll be honest, it seems that the quality of the product these days is inverse to the amount of DLC it has. The gaming market hasn't quite resolved the new business model's quirks, even after this many years of the concept of DLC existing. The only thing that has comparable quality to the...

    What's better than 1 Magnus? 2 Magnus!

    Magnus overflowed into another Magnus.

[R&F] Civ is about the map. Until it isn’t.

If you want, maybe try the complete version of Civ V with the Vox Populi mod. It's rather excellent. The base game itself is functional too.

[R&F] Civ is about the map. Until it isn’t.

Au contraire . I don't think gameyness is a problem. I think you can have a very competitive and focused game whilst still properly abstracting real life concepts without becoming too much of a simulation game. Civ IV's method of abstracting borders are about as far removed from reality as...

[R&F] Civ is about the map. Until it isn’t.

Improvement wise however, the tactical overlay, I feel, has improved compared to Civ V's one. Everything is much clearer and better colour coded.

[R&F] Civ is about the map. Until it isn’t.

Well, despite the fact that this isn't an ideas thread, these threads are always useful. The essence of good communication is open and honest communication, so to point out the positives and flaws in a level headed manner makes sense. Constructive criticism and all. I think its best to look to...

[R&F] Civ is about the map. Until it isn’t.

Excellent post. You're exploring what is essentially missing from the design of Civ VI. The issue that you're describing is that for all players with a mild to fanatical interest in history, Civ VI doesn't manage to model or abstract the elements that made up the rise and fall of civilisation...

    Micro ~ Addictive

Oh boy I can't disagree more I'm afraid. I don't think it is the grind at all. I think microgrind is actually counter intuitive to play. Take the first time the game series transitioned to 1upt. Before we had the stack of doom. Though it wasn't a great abstraction of combat, it worked for...

What building do you skip in most cites?

Having Amphis early on paid off later in a game I played, most in terms of having more great works to drop a political treatise on. I agree that they're very underwhelming initially.

    AI aggression at high difficulty

A standing army is a wonderous thing. In most 4x games I'll always invest in military, even if its a peacenik game. I'm playing at the base level and I was going for the standard assumption that the AI would be opportunistic. Sure enough, I have Napoleon nearby, he thinks I'm settling too...

    Progress happiness issues

I feel like Progress definitely requires an aggressive playstyle. Like, huge amounts of trade, envoys, great general border stealing of luxuries, great admiral for unique luxuries. It's not the civic tree that supports straight up war and extortion tactics, but it's definitely the middle way...
