A new book entry has been added: Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

Warlords Are Wusses! Cowardly, Snivelling.. Why Don't They Actually Lead In Combat?

In the early game, warlords shouldn't be attached to units at all. Using them as GP to boost XP in your high production cities are much smarter. In the middle game, you'll probably use 1 for West Point, and then military academy. Although in practice, I find that production is easy but +XP is...

Dear Shaka, +15 War Weariness will kill your civ.

I've got a recent game with 1,851 enemy unit kills and the game isn't over yet...

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

The SD can indeed be used as pillagers and also bombard cities as well as blockade. But a single line isn't enough, because the enemy stealth destroyers can easily move past your line and disappear into the deep ocean. That's also why you need 2 lines of sub pickets - to make sure there's no...

    Forts as airbases

I never liked the idea of allowing you (or the AI) to pre-position troops. How do you think that would work in real life?

    Submarines

Yes! I've always argued that the submarine should be given +100% against BB's and Missile Cruisers. That would force everyone to deploy destroyers and attack subs to help screen those forces.

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

Augustus and his allies against Pacal (me) and vassals. HUGE enemy army/navy. I've replayed a couple of times with different approaches - sometimes with extended war at sea and other times with a pre-emptive landing of ~100 units in the opening move. With the pre-emptive landing, the naval...

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

It's not a defense net at all - just surveillance. Of course it's tissue thin. The whole purpose is to just identify the enemy fleet locations. Also, in a game where the AI has hundreds of ships, you're not going to see only 1 fleet nor will you be able to match the AI in production. The...

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

If you're playing a game where the AI is already so far behind you in terms of power, then you don't need this guide at all. The question isn't whether you can win without these tactics. Obviously, it's quite possible. This guide (and the previous generic one) is for people who enjoy wars...

    Forts as airbases

That would be a good update. Occupation of a neutral fort with a land-unit makes it yours for the purpose of air/naval bases. Upon declaration of war, all your land units are automatically ejected from neutral forts.

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

For clarification, the Ocean Surveillance Network assumes that you're playing at a level where the AI you're fighting has equivalent technology and greater numbers thanks to production advantages, thus necessitating at least an initial defensive position because you can't just go and parade your...

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

Yes. Cruise missiles can be transferred from sub-to-MC or from MC-to-MC. It can't be used in the same turn of transfer, but it means you can rearm a battle fleet far from port without pulling the MC's all the way back. In fact, you can create a convoy system with subs for shuttling cruise...

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

I'll get the screenshot later, but the land mass looks like this OLOOOOC OFLOOOO OLLOOOO OLLFOOO OLCLLOO OFLOOOO OLOOOOO OOOOOOO As you can see, an island like this (no, not via WB - random generation) shields the continent to the east as well as provide quick transits . Approaching enemy...

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

Thanks for pointing out the details for people who didn't realize a land-locked city couldn't host naval units. The best such example (I will try to upload a screen shot) of how useful the island can be, it was a T-shaped island right off shore from my continent, forming the northern edge of...

Modern Naval Strategy for Beyond the Sword

That's what I thought before a few games against a large AI navy. The AI is a lot more clever now about sneaking in subs in unexpected spots to nuke you, and you can't protect yourself against nukes unless you get comprehensive coverage. You don't need to carpet the whole ocean, but the picket...
