Haven't been on the forums much in the past few months. Saw this thread and wondered "What happened?" Vikings/Denmark was a fearsome civ in previous editions of Civilization. I've played a couple of games as Denmark to see for myself if this civ is as weak as people said. I must agree with...
Yes, what FinsT said.
For me. it's fractal. You never know what you're going to get. I like the uncertainty of not having any idea of what the world map looks like.
My above comment is for when I'm planning to go for a wide empire from the start; that's when I choose Liberty. Usually, I'm more of a 4-cities Tradition player.
I usually go for the free worker first. At that early point of the game, I'm more interested in developing luxuries and strategic resources. Also, I usually haven't built the National College by that point (for me it's typically about turn 75), so one less city makes it easier to build the NC.
1) My computer does slow down a bit around turn 140, because of the huge map size. Not a showstopper, but noticeable.
2) I haven't figured out how the Protestant Reformation works in this scenario. I played a few times as France, and mid-game I suddenly found city-states to my East that...
For Alexander, I'd recommend Alexander of Macedon by Peter Green.
It gives you an idea of how far ambition can carry you, sometimes into madness. When you demand worship from your own generals, and compare your own exploits to those of Hercules, something might just be amiss.
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the National College yet. This is critical to getting your science numbers way up. If you get the NC built by about turn 80, you should be fine technologically on Emperor.
Will prioritizing the National College slow your expansion? Quite possibly...
The Dutch Unique Ability is surprisingly powerful. Being able to trade away your last copy of a luxury while still getting 2 happiness from it can make a huge difference.
Yes, exactly. I do the same.
Once you get used to dealing with barbarians, you'll learn to not disperse their camps unless:
1) someone else is about to do the same, or
2) a city-state asks you to (the CS will give you a big friendship bonus for dispersing the camp)
Keep in mind that...
There have been several threads along these lines, of making the AI smarter rather than giving it more bonuses.
The downside is that making the AI smarter will make turns take longer- considerably longer. A simple example would be computer chess- compare how long it takes for the computer to...
From the Greek 'poli', meaning many, and 'tics', being blood-sucking insects.
Your experience is not that unusual. Whenever I have Alex as a neighbor, I plan for an early war. He usually doesn't disappoint.
