The nostalgia was a big part of why we like the Civ 2 movies.
You also have to remember that the typical CPU back then couldn't do much rendering, they could just play movie files. So they were pretty cool given the technology of the time - plus you got to learn a bit of the history of the...
From best to worst - Civ IV, Civ 1, Civ 2, Civ3. I always liked the elegant simplicity of Civ1. Civ2 was fun for a while but it got really complicated. Civ3 had some good ideas that IV perfected, but it was REALLY annoying with the whole corruption scheme and the artillery concept. I got...
In this situation I find that it's better just to have a few missionaries head to strategic cities and/or capitals, and let the religion spread on its own from there. Also, someone else mentioned that missionaries double well as explorers if you have and Open Borders agreement.
And yeah...
We covered it rather extensively at this thread, "Benefits of first strike":

Ah yeah those were some awesome Civ 2 wonder movies - thanks for the link. Hanging Gardens was also a favorite of mine.
What I liked about Civ 2 movies was you got to see some actual historical footage. Civ 4 is kind of lacking in all that ... I liked feeling like Civ is an entertaining...
Civ 2 Colossus baby! I still have that song stuck in my head...
While I'm at it, the colossus was the most awesome wonder for Civ 1/2. You could combo that thing with other stuff (like Copernicus's Observatory) to make an ultra-city!
Oh, but we're talking about Civ4. Too bad I never...
I find that a missionary blitz is good in the early game for that badly needed early game cash. Especially if you have the holy city built and not much else to build. Keep in mind that missionaries can also give you a recon bonus if you have the holy city.
Damn I can see why Firaxis made a big bold disclaimer on how they didn't want to touch religious debates with a ten foot pole. Frankly I think the state's attitude towards religion (Free Religion, Pacifism) adequately handles atheism. Fact is, your state can choose to adopt a religion or it...
That's funny. When Gandhi was asked what he thought of Western Civilization, he thought it would be a good idea.
Anyway, I think they did a good job with religions. There's plenty of space for inquisitions (Theology - no spread of non-state religion) and religious wars/alliances in this...
Well, unhappiness is very well expressed in Civ, in that a state religion automatically gives +1 :) in every city. Religious buildings also build extra happiness if they're of state religions. Not to mention, you get diplomatic bonuses for similar religions to your opponents.
Interesting point - does anybody else notice that you tend to piss off people with different religions more if you have the Organized Religion or Theocracy civics? I notice once you adopt Free Religion, the religion penalties disappear, but that's pretty obvious.
How fortified are your cities?
Honestly, I think that if they notice big enforcements, they won't feel emboldened to attack or demand tribute. And that helps diplomacy. Everyone seems to be a lot friendlier when the oceans are swarming with my destroyers...
